Can I back feed through my inverter from a generator to charge my batteries?

    No what it is is a customer (we do minor RV work) had a DC to AC power inverter from his battery source. Simply, but he thought he could hook up his generator to the AC side of Inverter and back feed into the system to charge the batteries and run the 120VAC. I told him it was a bad bad thing to back feed through an inverter but of course he insists its fine.

What does it invert?Higher voltage to lower or what?Either way,with 1200 watts being inverted,it is not a good idea to charge a battery with that kind of power.Batteries need to be charged low and slow.We are talking milliamps for hours.Fast charging a battery results in a very good chance of explosion,which is never good.Acid from the battery will go everywhere.

please check the voltage your generator is supplying to the to the inverter because a high voltage and frequency can make the relays in the inverter to make clicking sounds,and also do not allow your inverter batteries to run completely low before you charge it

Hi, well you see this happened because the "Load" on the Inverter was more than it could handle. You see the Inverter senses the resistance of the batteries to determine how flat they are and how much current to put into the batteries, if anything else is connected to said batteries, that will simply muck up the sensing,and as has happened in your case destroyed the inverter.
I have serviced many inverters and the most likely failure that would emit sparks etc is failed output semiconductors.
One cannot really use an inverter to charge the batteries, like you did, UNLESS the batteries were completely isolated from the Generators wiring, and even then, your inverter, still may not have enough power to do this. As this is NOT what it was designed for.
Really an inverter is used to step up the Voltage from 12/24 Volts DC, batteries to 120/230 V AC.
Now again, one could use it, to then have a Battery Charger plugged into that, and use the output from the battery charger to charge some "Other" batteries, but that seems a bit roundabout.
Yes the Inverter will charge it's OWN batteries, BUT ONLY if that is the ONLY thing connected to the inverter.

The laws of physics dictate that at each energy convertion loss will occur. In fact the loss trying to get wind to generate energy to charge is highly inefficient. To do resarch on this search google for "perpetual motion machines". You will see that the laws of physics will not crate free energy this way. You might get 1 amp at most from a generator while the inverter is drawing 20 amps from the battery.

although it is possible to do separately most times the transfer switch is internal to the inverter , and the fact you mention that inverter is not charging batteries tells me your fault lay in the inverter all or part of it is not working , look at it carefully these have sometimes two reset breakers on there cases

Assuming your generator has the battery charger option?
Measure the battery voltage at the battery lead in the generator, without the unit running, or the motorhome ignition on. It should read approx 12V after the unit has been sitting a while. Then start the generator, it should rise to approx 13.8 with a good battery. If it does not then the stator windings and charge rectifier in the generator should be checked. If the voltage is 13.8 approx with the generator then you problem lies further upstream, and possibly with an isolation solenoid. If you generator does not have a battery charge winding/option then charging comes from the line voltage via a motorhomes inverter, check the inverter.

My inverter (500 va) (battery based electric generator for power backup) keeps on charging batteries even when the charging light goes off making the inverter, wires and battery very hot.

This a possible failure of the voltage detection circuit in the inverter main board and requires the fault be identified by checking the voltage/current feed/limiter to the battery.
Once when the battery voltage has reached the threshold set up the charging should stop and then the circuit will analyse the voltage on the board to trigger the charging to be put ON.
This can be a failure of the detection circuit and if not checked can damage the battery.

I'm dumb. Can I hook an inverater to my generator and produce more enegry than my generator produces???

Please understand that the generator produces power from fuel with an engine wheras the invertor is one which genrerates power from a stored battery using the principle of frequency switching a DC source to induct and produce AC.
Now you can have an uninterupted power supply setting with the invertor backed up by the generator so that when the battery voltage goes down you can start and charge the invertor and also supply the extra energy .
the ratings of both must also be considered.

Frequency is a function of generator RPM. Slower the engine, lower the frequency. Faster the engine, higher then frequency.

Look at your generator first, it should be able to maintain this load without problems - check your governor.

You can try plugging in a lamp directly into the generator so that it won't see a pure inductive (input to inverter) load, but will also see the resistive load from the lamp.

Power Draw of 10Amps is going to be what it is, unless you change the AMP Hour capacity of your battery bank that is connected. Be careful though, as this will not only reduce the charging current (and amount of load present on the generator), but it may also affect how the inverter operates with heavy loads, and may cause the charging profile to go into bulk and float modes prematurely.

Are you feeding your generator into the inverter via the transfer switch, or are you plugging the coach power cord into the generator? The former would force all the AC loads to be switched by the inverter, the latter allows all ac loads to be powered, even those that you may not know about / realize (water heater loads are a big one) and eat up generator capacity.

check the system but you may have to turn off the batteries
the inverter is charging the batteries but when mains power fails , the batteries will be discharging back through the inverter that is dc converted back to ac
if you power on a genset and the ac is not phased correctly, what you describe will happen--- inverter ac from the batteries against genset ac to the inverter-
If you had mains power on then it would dead stop the genset because of the out of phase situation
it all has to do with the 2 wave patterns for ac current from each unit being in harmony and not working against each other

More than likely you may a a relay that is stuck or not energizing which should switch the charging mode over automatically. Trace back from the generator to the charging circuit for the batteries. I'm not sure where the relay (or solinoid) would be located but you can be assured it is something in the charger sensing/switching circuit.
