Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I purchased a Targus USB 4-Port hub for use with my iMac 24" computer (new), using iMac OS 10.5.2. There is a power input connector on the hub, but no mention of power requirements on the package Please describe need for power if any -- am assuming it may be needed for Mac portables? And source for power supply if power is needed. Thanks, John Brougher 214-368-7242, email johnbdal@att.net

How to install a sd card reader on a Dell Dimension 8200 PC Desktop? no 4 pin usb on motherboard?

I managed to install a card reader on my Dell Dimension 8200.

The main problem is that the Dell motherboard does not have the correct USB pin. This is a 9-pin MoBo USB header.

The quick answer is I installed a USB card with an internal port.

Secondly I reverse mounted a powered 4-port USB hub in the spare 3.5" bay.

Third, I purchased 2 USB 5 pin male to usb leads...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/v2-0-Male-Motherboard-Header-Connector/dp/B000QC7NKM/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

You cannot buy a USB card with 2 internals and do away with the 4 port powered USB hub because the card reader does need to be connected to a powered USB port.

Broken black piece inside usb port

This is usually going to be a part replacement problem. the black piece is part of the connectors. and backs up or guides the connectors. you can go to your local computer parts store such as frys, or an electronics parts house. and buy the connectors unless it is one that is attached to the motherboard in the back of the computer. if this is the case and you do not have enough usb ports, then you have to get an external usb hub. usually a powered hub is best.

I have two Gigaware IDE enclosures with USB

My guess is not enough power is available to run both devices at once.
Do your hubs have a external power supply?
Do the IDE Enclosures have a port for their own connection to a power supply?

The available power on a the pc's usb port is about 500ma (from memory)

Have a look at how much power your IDE disks actually need. It should be written on the label.
If the total is more than 500 ma then you will need to provide more power either via your usb hub or to the enclosure directly.

Hope this helps.

I have Entrega hub 4U circa 1998. Warning "too high current draw.....will disable usb port 2007 duo core imac using OS 10.5.6. can I use this device or is it incompatible? Still works fine on 1998 ima

its just warning you that the hub is sapping too much power from the imac, newer hubs are only a couple of $$ and are much more power efficient, try somewhere like dealextreme.com

New keyboard and mouse set only works plugged into usb ports

You could purchase a 4 port usb hub for less than $30. Leave the keyboard & mouse where they are & use the hub for your other devices. This is probably the easiest option. Hope this helps.

Try other ports in your laptop aside from the one you tried to plug into. Some USB plugs do not plug well into the USB port. It may be a factory defect. If it is still under warranty, you may have it replaced. Make sure you bring your laptop with you when you do this to make sure the new USB hub works.

I purchased a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 7-Port Hub recommended by the salesman at the office supply store. It does not work with my new Dell computer which uses Windows Vista operating system. Please...

Normally USB Hubs all new are 2.0 and they use a simple USB connection that should work with all computers, you can try a different USB port in your computer and if that still doesnt work then most likely that product is not a name brand and it does not have the built in driver for the mass device driver which is what usb ports use to function and multiplicate and you should return it and get a better / different one. Hope my answer gets you closer to a solution. Please Help rate me if I helped you out or not I am new but a very good tech.
