How to fix it depends on what operating system you use. For Windows right click on the desktop and choose Screen Resolution. Look under "What display should I use" and follow the instructions or simply drop the resolution down one step

When I take a picture it only shows a black screen. Nothing is viewable through the view finder

There is a recall out on that camera. Go to Nikon for the details and fix: http://www.nikonusa.com/Service-And-Support/Service-Advisories/COOLPIX-Service-Advisory.page

Screen got hit with a stick. screen has blue vertical lines.

The screen itself can't be fixed, only replaced. Here's the part# for the screen. EAJ38817301

( Just the part alone )
At shopjimmy.com, you're looking at maybe $240 for the screen.

Sadly, they don't have one in stock right now.

Everywhere else, they are asking well over a $1,000.

A damaged screen means death to a TV. Sorry to bring you bad news.

Laptop monitor not viewable

To determine if the problem is the lcd screen, plug a regular pc monitor or flat screen into the 15 pin High-Density D-shell (VGA) port on the back panel of the laptop and power the laptop up.
But it sounds like you are having some issues with the laptop chassis. Has anyone take the laptop apart for any reason? They may not have put it back together properly.

You have internal problems, possibly the ccd . Also there could be internal connections which have become loose.

Needs repair.

This may not be able to be fixed.
Sounds like internal trouble.
Could be a loose link internally. Could be some problem with the ccd sensor. If the colors change as you are trying to take a picture, then suspect the ccd sensor.
If it is the ccd, then Nikon may fix it for free.
I suggest you go to the Nikon website for your country, and call the (usually toll free) number for service and information.
Take care,
