Question about Maytag Refrigerators

4 Answers

I had to open a cover in the fridge compartment of my Maytag MSD 2656kgb and then immediately felt that the spring which holds the little door in between the freezer compartment and the fridge compartment fell off. I opened that little door but now cannot close it because it got stuck in the open position. (This probably happened because there's no spring over there anymore.) As a result of having the door open all the time the food in the upper shelf gets frozen if put relatively close to the door. I know that I now need to take off that entire part, figure out how to close the door and then put the spring back on. Finally I will have to screw in the entire part back where it belongs. However, I could not find a "parts manual" or "repair manual" on the Net that explains how to do these 2 steps. Any suggestions?

I think you're referring to the damper, which opens to cool the refrigerator. I'm not a refrigerator tech, but I did find a neat web page with your model on it, and diagrams of how things go together, and here it is:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5171227
Here is another site that has troubleshooting information:
http://www.repairclinic.com/Refrigerator-Troubleshooting
You might be able to find a service manual at this site:
http://kitchen.manualsonline.com/search.html?q=Maytag+MSD+2656kgbSearch+over+600%2C000+products...&submit.x=47&submit.y=16
Good luck, thanks for using FixYa, and hope this helps.

Thanks much. Could you please advise me under what number the ice chute door is pictured in the diagram? I believe the door is not closed at all times and, like I said before, the purpose of the spring is to regulate the air flow. (Because in case the door is shut all the time there is no need to put a spring on it at all.) Could you please explain exactly how it is regulated, i.e. what prompts the door to get partially [or fully] opened? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, but I see no spring mentioned on that page and the main thing that I need to know is how to attach a spring (regulating the air flow in between the freezer and regulare fridge compartments) to the door. Secondly, to accomplish my task I need some explanations on how to actually close the door and attach the spring and not just a diagram. (For your reference: I typed in the word "spring" in the "Search By Keyword" field on the page that opened after I clicked on your link. The search returned 1 result, which you can see athttp://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_d... and that spring looked exactly like mine.)

I believe that spring goes to the ice chute door. It is also similar to a spring used on a soap dispenser on a dishwasher. The spring slides onto a pin and the ends hook to the door itself being under tension it closes the door.

Freezer works, fridge side not cool

OK if the fan was replaced and the vents are open there has to be a restriction of air flow over evaporator coil causing the lack of air flow. On some models like yours there is something called an auto damper between the freezer and fresh food compartment and the damper is operated like a thermostat bulb on it's own solo. The best way to test them is to remove and place the thermostat bulb or tube coil into cold or hot water. I will gather more information for you as we go along here. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Freezer gets cold refrigerator doesn't

check the damper door located between the freezer and refrigerator compartments(this lets in the cold air from the freezer) and make sure it opens and closes with your temp adjustment in the refrigerator compartment, sometimes they ice-up and are frozen in one position then take a hair dryer and defrost the door

Maytag fridge which freezes food in fridge compartment

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

Cylinder seal

for most dryers,
Go buy HiTemperature silicone adhesive (tube)
tools required couple pairs locking pliers/visegrips screwdrivers

Unplug dryer
remove the front cover, either
  • couple screws at the bottom and spring clips to pop off with a screw driver OR
  • couple of spring clips to hold the top lid on, then screws top and bottom of both sides

examine the case to find the exact mounting
unclip cables from door switch
set front panel aside
unhook drive belt from tensioner pulley
pull drum forward and out

remove old felt
scrape off old adhesive
put adhesive per instructions (some 2 surfaces some 1) on drum/felt
clip felt in place on drum with visegrip at 1 point
stretch felt around drum, gluing and clipping in place with vicegrips as you go
allow glue to set

reassemble in reverse order

wow took longer to type than it actually takes to do it

Maytag Electric Dryer Stopped Working

Check spring tab behind door switch-if it's bent/out of adjustment, circuit will act like door is always open.

To confirm this, open door, set dryer to active setting, and hold in door switch; if it comes on, then it's either the spring tab, or the switch is malfunctioning

Maytag washer door boot

Remove 2 screws holding door hinge to cabinet and remove door.  Then remove 2 screws opposite these. Grab front panel with thumbs at area of screws you removed and pull outward with thumbs. Panel will pivot forward.  Remove panel from lower clips.  At top of exposed area remove 2 5/16 screws.  Remove brackets under them.
Open dispenser and remove 4 screws.  Careful not to drop in dispenser.  Remove dispenser frame assembly.
You can now raise top of washer to a 90 degree position.
Now back to front exposed area.  Grab boot where it contacts front and peel out of groove.  Also remove two screws holding light assembly and remove cover.  Remove all 5/16 screws holding front assembly and the ones on top area where it is on a bevel.  Remove front assembly by folding up and onto top.
Now we are at the boot.  Remove spring and wire assembly holding boot to drum.  Make note on boot position and spring position.  Remove boot.  Install new boot onto drum.  wrap wire around drum with ends at top.  Now the fun!  Hook spring to on end of wire and using vise-grips,  pull to other end to hook into wire.  It can be done,  honest.
Now just reverse to reassemble.  should be instructions with boot.   Good luck!
