Troybuilt 15cs Can not adjust cab. Only runs with choke pulled full on. touch gas to kick down choke engine stops???? Help

Sounds like you will need to clean your carburetor.
Sometimes you can get by with priming it a few times, and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets,but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
If the mower/weedeater is over a couple years old, then I also recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit,because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, You will first seat the jet screws and count the number of turns it takes to seat the jets from their original position.
That way when you go to put the jets back in, you know how many turns they were in/out.

Start up after sitting long time


After sitting a long time
1. drain all gas as alchol in gas absorbs water BAD!!!
2 mix new gas + oil correctly and fill tank
3 spray starting fluid in carb.
4 put full choke
5 set throttle
6 pull till engine pops
7 place choke to half choke and pull a few times to start
8 repeat steps 3 to 8 until running

Other problems are bad gas lines
problem with spark

Bottom line the engine should at least burn off the starting fluid
if it continues to stop the carb is going to be cleaned

Adjusting the choke


nice engine get rid of the choke all together you dont need it its just to choke the engine for cold starting i would get a 725 cfm without choke for it or turn it over to injection tbi or port. do you have an electric fuel pump you will want one when doing without the choke

Ryobi CS30 Trimmer starts and runs in full choke and half choke but stumbles and stalls on run. Not up to full rpms when in full choke and half choke....


You probably need a slight carburetor adjustment. Try to turn the L mixture screw (the one near the bottom of the carburetor on the air filter side, closest to the engine) 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn counterclockwise. These mixture adjustment screws ( L and H) have odd heads on them and conventional tools won't turn them. I use an automotive type plastic wire connector (around 22 gauge) with a ring terminal end which I can hold. Tap the plastic end of the wire terminal connector onto the head of the screw with a small hammer and this will enable you to adjust the L screw. This adjustment will increase you high speed side and possibly allow it to run off choke in a regular manner.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

The symptoms you describe are typical of debris in the fuel bowl of the carb. I am going to assume for the moment that it is a similar to a Briggs and Stratton engine. Engine model type and serial information is what we work with to resolve engine problems regardless of the mower brand. I note you said it was a Scott Bonner SX4000 engine. I am also assuming that you have the 18 inch GreenKeeper like this one:

I do not have access to Scott Bonner Engine parts or technical data but if you clean out the fuel float bowl and it is still hard to start then the choke function of the engine is not working. Your engine has a "Bowl drain" screw on the bottom of the carb float bowl for removing carb debris or water in addition to a bowl nut.

Most likely due to the throttle cable needing and adjustment so that the choke is closed when choke is selected. Adjustment of the throttle cable is as simple as losening the clamp screw (Do NOT remove it) on the side of the carb throttle control and moving the throttle to STOP then re-tightening the clamp retaining screw. This should allow your choke to move full closed when selected. You may have to experiment with full throttle and STOP throttle control positions with the clamp screw loose but not removed to see which position will give you full throttle, choke and STOP. After each adjustment you MUST tighten the clamp screw to test the throttle cable travel on the the throttle plate. Beleive it or not... the person that assemble the mower made the intial throttle adjustment. It may have never been tested before you got the mower.

If you still have problems.... this is the brief way to start an engine that has choke problems. Remove the spark plug and squirt a splash of gas into the spark plug hole and then re-install the spark plug. Just don't over-do the splash of gas and if your messy wipe off the excess so you do not start a fire. (This method always works but you occasionally foul a spark plug with too much gas)

Need to know what carb screw adjustment need to be set at weedeater starts for about 4-7 sec then shuts down put new hoses on checked gas filter and cap checked out ok. i pump the ball about 10 times...


If there is a choke adjustment you should set that at full until the trimmer warms up, don't touch the gas. Then repull start at half choke, don't touch the gas either at this time. Then start at no choke, and then set your idle on the carberator with the adjustment screw. Also don't push the primer bulb so many time you will cause the spark plug to get flooded and drown out the spark, which is exactly what is happening.

I have a poulan pro pp4620avhd chainsaw. I can get it to start and stay running as long as I have the choke on. I can even run it at high speed using the choke control. When I pull the trigger to feed it...


Check the fuel filter and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for condition. Check the carburetor fasteners for tightness. If the saw has a lot of hours, remove the lower section of the carburetor and check the condition of the diaphragm--it should not be hard/cracked. If everything seems to check out ok, Turn both jet screws CW to stops (lightly), then CCW each 1-1/2 turns. The engine should start and run--allow the engine to warm up. Pull the throttle full on and adjust H needle CW til the engine speeds up, but still 4-strokes. Proper adjustment is when the engine 4-strokes, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Let idle and adjust L CW so that the engine runs fairly well, but allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Adjust the idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!

Wont start


ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher on hand when working on carburetors.
Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side or bottom of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plug and try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the
carb and spray into the screw holes as well.

Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine.

There is a proper way to start the engine. Four controls are on your bike to assist in starting.
  • The choke, used when the engine is cold. Pull the red knob for choke.
  • The " Hot Start " Lever, used when the engine is hot. Pull the lever to lean the fuel mix when the engine has been running.
  • The de-compression lever, always used.
  • The throttle, used to prime the cylinder.
Don't kick, instead, push the kick lever downward. You will feel the back pressure as the piston is going upward on the compression stroke to the point the pressure is great enough that the kick lever "locks up". You are very close to TDC. NOW, pull in the de-compression lever. Push the kick lever a little bit more to get the piston past TDC. Now release the de-compression lever. Give the throttle a 1/4 turn then let it snap closed. A diaphragm in the carb gives a shot of gas when this is done. DO NOT do this multiple times because you will flood the engine. Leave the throttle closed when kicking. A flooded engine will often backfire. Now give a strong kick through the full sweep of the kick start lever. Quickly get your foot off the kick lever at the end of the kick to avoid any chance of "kickback" from the kick lever. This happens in the case of a misfire, aka > backfire. It can be very painful, and can even break a leg. I am serious about that. Repeat the process (but without the throttle priming), until the bike starts. A good battery, a clean spark plug, a clean carb and clean air filter will also aid in starting.

McCulloch 3200 takes many pulls to start, runs good when does.


I don't think I can help, but normal starting procedure for me is to put choke on, pull on recoil until it kicks over once. shut off choke and restart. Sounds like you have fixed almost everything & adjusted mag right. Rick
