Garmin reports low battery, turns off in 2 seconds even when connected to car battery

Check to make sure that the rear USB jack isn't loose. This is a common problem on ALL nuvi's that are charged by a USB jack only. If the jack is broken, the battery will not be charged. When you plug in the charger, the battery icon with green bars should go away. If you can still see it, your USB jack is broke and needs to be replaced. I've replaced these many times. Prolong Your GPS Battery Life

Are you tired of having to keep your GPS plugged into the car for the entire duration of your drive? Does it die out instantaneously after removing it from it's jack? If it does, there nothing you can do to fix it because the battery had over heated and lost its battery life tremendously. I can only say that you would need to purchase a new one.
However, if your GPS doesn't die out right away, here's your chance to start prolonging its life. First, let it completely die out by turning it on, and leaving it on until it the batteries run out of charge. Second, plug the dead GPS into either a house outlet, or a car jack (if you are using the car jack, make sure the car is on!!!). Third, wait for the GPS to reach full capacity, but DO NOT let it overcharge, it kills the battery. So I recommend checking on the charging GPS periodically at even intervals of your choice. When it is done, just unplug it, and it is good to go.
NOTE: Do not charge the GPS in while in use.NOTE: If the battery is low as you are driving, turn it off and plug it in to charge.Explanation: This is why the steps above the notes are to be taken to prolong the life of your GPS' battery. 1 Complete Charge + 1 Complete Drain = 1 Charging Cycle

Charging connector is loose

Yes, you have found the problem. The mini-USB jack is broken, preventing the battery from being charged. However, you can charge the battery by using the 660's snap in cradle and bypass the USB port. If you want the jack replaced, please see this link:

http://www.sharc.net/gps_charger_repair.htm

You will want to fix the jack because you will not be able to update the firmware or map until the jack is fixed.

Garmin charger has red light on and wont charge

mine too. Its brand new. Worked OK in my car for a couple of small trips, and unfortunately I didn't notice the lights status on the charger. Then lost satellite reception (not being charged at the time). Now red light on car charger and kept turning off/won't turn on. I have an old mains charger from garmin 660 which has a malfunctioning antenna and this 1490 was meant to replace ! Its charging now anddoes turn on, but no answer yet I'm afraid. I intend to register it with garmin and log a call with them. Also looking at the manual, it says there is a fuse in the head of the charger which should be checked. I haven't done this yet, but not sure if red light would be on if fuse had blown ?

I pluged in my Magellan Roadmate 1200 in to the computer with the usb cable thinking it would charge. It now says it has a fatal error and that screen won't go away. Did I erase the memory on it? I...

im sure its not trash, but i dont think the usb will charge this model ( the usb wont charge all models of magellan, only some) while the unit is on, use a paperclip and insert it in the small hole on the side of the gps, that should return it to its normal state.

if you need further help, just let me know.

Garmin nivi 200 won,t turn on

The mini-USB jack needs to be either resoldered or replaced. When the jack is loose, you will not be able to charge the internal battery. The jack becomes loose from overuse. The jack needs more mechanical support to the pronted circuit board. I have fixed this problem many times.

Garmin charger problems

19A259741 is the serial number. The model number should be to the left of that on the decal label. It's sounds like you have a Nuvi 2xx series.

The mini-USB jack is loose. Either is has come loose from the board or the connections within the jack are loose from everyday wear and tear (use).

If the jack is loose from the board and it needs to be resoldered or replaced if the jack is worn out.

Not charging

Hello brocstar,

You could have a problem either with the power cord itself or the DC input jack on your GPS.

When you say you wiggled the "power lead" to fix the problem I believe you are referring to the actual power cord. If so, it's possible that the cord has a short that has progressively gotten worse and eventually caused the cord to fail. In that case it should be a relatively simple fix to simply replace the power cord and that's where I would start.

If replacing the power cord doesn't work then the problem likely is with the GPS itself and the unit may need factory service to repair the DC jack, battery or charge circuitry.

Hope this helps,
Ken
