Question about GE Americana A4425GDTWW Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Freezer is not as cold as it should be. Removed front bottom grill to try and clean condensor coils, but did not see any coils, only a couple of tubes. When I ran brush under fridge, it did not pick up any dust, pet hair, or anything. Does this model have covered condesor coils by chance? Thanks!

You can probably access the coils better from the back behind the cardboard cover. Make sure the fan near there is running when the compressor runs. You may have a defrost problem.

The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.

you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls in some models and on the back in others.

GFreezer is cold, suddenly won't freeze

Hi, make sure the evap coil and the condensor coils are clean. make sure there is no ice build up on the evaporator located in the back of the freezer. It could also be a bad t-stat or low on refrigerant. Call a tech if it still does not work after you clean and make sure that both coils are clean and ice free.

The freezer will not stop runnig

Refgriderators loose some of there cooling capacity if the condensor coils are not kept clean .To clean the coils pull out the fridge, remove the front and back bottom grill and vacoom or blow all the lint off the grills. If blowing out ,it can get messy.I usually put the vacuum in the back, cover the rest of the opening with a towel and use air to blow from the front.Hope this helps if so please give us a 4 thumbs up. The divider between fridge and freezer is very hot. How can it be cooled down

Clean the coils at the bottom front , behind the bottom kick plate AND pull the refrig out and remove the panel covering the compressor . Once removed , check that the cooling fan ( condensor fan motor ) is not blocked and is running as the compressor runs .

make sure the damper vent door located between the freezer and refrige compartments is opening and letting in cold air from the freezer,if they ice up they can stick shut and not allow air flow, this door is behind a plastic grille an a hair dryer works great to defrost them

The unit is dripping water from the opening in the ceiling of refridgerator

The drain at the bottom of the freezer under the coils is clogged. Remove Icemaker if you have one, remove bottom floor of freezer, remove back panel of freezer. Use hairdryer to melt ice. ALL ICE MUST BE REMOVED. Use hot water and a turkey baster to get ice out of drain hole located about middle under coils. Be patient, do not chip ice with sharp tool. After ice is removed pour hot water down drain hole. Water must come out in drain pan under refrigerator(you may have to take front grille off to get to pan)

If Ice returns after a few weeks, you need to look at defrost thermostat which is usually clipped on cold coil at back of freezer. This part or the defrost timer could be defective.

The refigerator does not get cold. Long term ice forms in Freezer blocking through holes. When first pugged in seems to circulate air to refrigerator

Bottom of refrigerator not getting cold enough, freezer is working fine, - Magic Chef -model MCBR1000w

have you cleaned out the coils underneath the fridge? it's very simple. pull the fridge out, look underneath(try pulling off the bottom grill from the front for more access), and start cleaning. to much dust and lint will hinder the coils from cooling. A vacuum with the brush attachment or little broom works good.

Refrigerator cools, but no freezer fan & no condensor fan running

Check the back of you fridge and make sure the coils are clean. If you have access to a small air compressor, blow everything out and make sure the motor are is clean. The build up of dirt on the coils will not let the heat escape during the cooling process.
