Question about Hampton Bay 60 In. St. Regis Fan, Ancient Bronze

1 Answer

I have had my ceiling fan on for about 5 years. Hardly ever turn it off. I keep it on low but recently it's been turning itself onto medium or high. With the remote I can set it back to low but eventually it turns itself up. This morning the light turned on by itself. Is my fan possessed or is a replacement part needed. thank you so much.

Some one got a Hampton bay fan or something that is interfering with your remote settings. In the fan and in the remote there are codes that you can change. Try that,I thought I had a ghost but it was a neighbor with the same brand of fan

Fan only wobbles on high....recently 'bumped'

Check all your screws especially the set screw at top of fan that goes into rod. Blades could be warped from the water. Ball of fan not set in bracket correctly. When your buying a fan, look for blade pitch.13 degree or better is best. You shouldn't have to use the fan on high unless it's a low-end fan with a low blade pitch. It's costing you more money to run the fan on high. Sorry to get so preachy, I'm a fan dealer .

Replaced fan switch but fan only works on low and high but not work on medium

You have a problem with the connection to the medium speed motor winding, or a problem in the motor. Turn off power to the fan, open it up and verify that the wire nuts are properly installed.

Fan works on high and low ok but in medium it runs at low speed.

Sounds like the speed control switch has been replaced recently, or one of the capacitors in the black brick in the switch housing has failed. Most modern fans use a double capacitor for medium and low. High is wired straight across the run capactor (which is usually 2 wire by itself, or all three capacitors may be in one big black brick)

The symptoms you describe suggest that the speed capacitor has failed. Typically they are 5+5MFD, or two in one case On Medium both 5MFD capacitors are activated, but on low only one is activated. The capacitors serve as a "choke" that limits the amount of current getting to the motor (not voltage, but amperage)

Find out the manufacturer of the fan and if it is Hunter, their number is 1-901-745-9222. Tell them the model# of your fan and they shall get you hooked up with a new cap.

Wiring code for ceiling fan

These fans do not have a standard color code for the fan switch. What you can do is turn off the power, keep the white neutral connected. Then using the black power wire take one of the switch wires and connect to that black, turn the power on and observe the speed .. low mark it 1, medium mark it 2, high mark it 3. Repeat untill you have identified all the speed wires. Then connect these wires to the 1,2,3, terminations of your new switch

Hunter ceiling fan-just installed -possible speed control problem

Sounds like the fan is defective. All internal wiring from the switch to the motor is factory installed. The fan has power going to it. Just to make sure, double check the wiring from the ceiling fixture to the fan.
Problem could be a faulty switch on the fan or faulty motor(bad winding for med. speed). Try reverse switch on the fan to operate the opposite direction and see if medium speed works. If medium does work in opposite direction, it pretty much points to a defective fan. In any case, unless you discover that the ceiling wires were reversed going into the fan, I'd say new fan to the returns dept.

Hunter fan with remote control was 3 speed, now only 2 speed

It sounds like fan motor is okay. There are two motor windings -- one low speed, one medium speed. Low winding gives you low speed, medium winding gives you medium speed, both windings give you high speed -- so I would say if you get high speed, both windings are good.

The remote (the hand held transmitter) controls the speed by raising and lowering the frequency of the current which is 60 cycle coming to the fan ceiling box. If the fan speed -selector switch (usually a pull switch) is set to high, when the remote (transmitter) signals the receiver to change speeds, the frequency of the current is changed by the receiver (the receiver is usually in the fan housing).

Sounds like you'll need to replace the remote system -- these come in sets, both transmitter and receiver, and cost about $30. If you're not experienced with wiring fans, you should get an electrician to do the job.

My Hunter fan will only switch from high to low speed and won't

if the three speed switch is functioning the middle speed winding is bad.  Either replace the fan or hook up a wall speed control and keep the fan on high.

Ceiling fan stuck on high

Try removing 120 volt power from the fan by turning offf the house circuit breaker or removing the fuse from the fusebox that supplies power to the fan. Wait 30 seconds and restore power. This may reset the fan speed control in the fan itself.
