You need to be running a particular program for the unit to be activated. There are several and so we wouldn't know which one is installed. You can try looking at Start/All Programs/anything that says "***Scan***" such as ScanShell 800N, Scan2Contacts, Scan2Web for Business cards, IdScan for Business Cards, Scanshell.net for Business Cards and a lot more.
Additionally, instructions for use depends on what the scanning is intended to be used for: email, web, database, ACT, CRM or plain card. Perhaps this site can help you by clicking on the particular operation you are interested in.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Is there a gear grinding noise associated with this? If so, call your local dealer for service. If not:Clean all the rollers you can reach with a cloth dampened with alcohol. Check for any obstructions in the paper path like torn paper, heavy toner buildup on guide plates or the edges of the scanning glass, or any paper guides obviously loose or out of place.

I am very familar with the scanshell scanner you have I have repaired several of them in the past.
There really isnt anything that wrong with your scanner it just needs to be calibrated. When you purchased it there was a calibration sheet included in the box that you need to use I hope you still have it. If not go here to purchase some new sheets http://www.scanshell-store.com/accessories.htm They used to be free but when I looked at there web page they are not listed any longer. Also here is a link to a 800 manual which describes how to run the calibration process http://www.id-reader.com/ftp/applications/manual/scanshell_manual.pdf This will correct your problem and your scanner will be as good as new again.
I hope this helps you out and if it does please leave me some feedback.
