Use an Ethernet cable to connect one of the LAN ports from the router to the network-port on your PC.
Start Internet Explorer.
Enter 'http://192.168.1.254', and "login" to the web-server "inside" the router.
Run the "Network Setup Wizard" to configure the router.

If you have trouble connecting to your modem, you may need to lock the speed down on the WAN port of your router to 10Mbps. Within the web-based configuration utility for the router, go to Tools > Misc and the option to select the WAN speed will be towards the bottom. Not all routers have this option.

Follow the steps configuring the router once again...

Step 1 Log into the web-based configuration by typing in the IP address of the router (default:192.168.0.1) in your web browser. The username is admin (all lowercase) and the password is blank (nothing).

Note: The address 192.168.0.1 is NOT on the Internet. The web-based configuration is built-in to the router.

Step 2 Click the Setup tab and then click the Internet button.

Step 3 Dynamic IP Address is the default value, however, if Dynamic IP Address is not selected as the WAN type, select Dynamic IP Address from the drop down menu. Click Clone Mac Address. Click on Save Settings to save the changes.

Step 4 Click on Status. Under WAN, Click DHCP Renew. If it does not get an IP address or times out, then continue with the next step.

Step 5 Power cycle the cable modem and router using the following steps:

Turn the cable modem off (first)

Turn the router off

Leave them off for 2 minutes**

Turn the cable modem on (first)

Wait until you get a solid cable light on the cable modem

Turn the router on

Wait 30 seconds ..

Step 6 Follow Step 1 again to log back into the web configuration. Click the Status tab and click the Device Info button. If you do not already have a public IP address under the WAN heading, click on the DHCP Renew button.

When I type in 192.168.1.1 it said that Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. Please tell me how to fix it?

If you just typed in the IP address only then it won't work, you need to type "http://" in front of the IP address.
Also for configuring wireless routers a LAN cable needs to be attached to the router and computer.
This is removed after configuring the router, and these settings are used to configure the wireless card in the computer/laptop.
The following various router configuring IP address are as follows :-
Belkin http://192.168.2.1
Billion http://192.168.1.254
DLink and Netgear http://192.168.0.1
Linksys hppt://192.168.1.1
If you need further assistance please contact me with details, make and model of router, what steps you took and error messages.

Settings on Linksys router for the DCS 5220 to view remotely and settings on Securicam

Configuring your Linksys router for remote desktop is a task that's needed before you can access your computer from outside the network. If you plan to connect to your remote desktop machine from the Internet, you need to configure the router to allow traffic to the PC. Linksys is a common router used on home networks for wireless and LAN configurations. Configuring your router to allow port forwarding to a remote desktop only takes a few steps through the graphical user interface.
  1. tep 1 Open your browser window and type the IP address of the router in your address bar. This opens a window for the username and password needed for access to configure the router.
  2. Step 2 Click the "Applications and Gaming" tab on the opening screen. This opens a window with a list of ports of which you can open for access on your network.
  3. Step 3 Type "Remote Desktop" in the application textbox.
  4. Step 4 Enter "3389" in the "Start" and "Stop" port ranges. This port number is specific to the remote desktop application.
  5. Step 5 Leave the value of "Both" in the protocol listbox.
  6. Step 6 Type the IP address of the internal machine on your network. The IP address is the machine running remote desktop. When traffic from the Internet reaches the router, it forwards the request to this IP address.
  7. Step 7 Check the "Enabled" checkbox and click "Save Settings."
  8. Step 8 Close the browser window.

Cant connect to internet

Configuring router for Cable Internet (LINKSYS)

To configure your router for Cable you will need to set your router's WAN (INTERNET) port to 'Dynamic IP' (DHCP) option. The router is set to this option by default.

Configuration Steps:

Step 1
Connect the cable modem to the WAN (INTERNET) port of your router. If the modem has USB connection make sure that it is NOT connected to any computers via the USB cable and that the modem is switched to Ethernet (not USB). Only the modem's Ethernet port should be connected to the router's WAN (INTERNET) port.
Connect your computer(s) to the router's LAN port(s) or establish connection to it wirelessly.

Step 2
Open your Internet Explorer and log into your router by typing in its IP address (in most cases the default IP is http://192.168.1.1 ). Note that you do not have to be on the Internet in order to access this address because you are just connecting to your router's address. Specify username and password for your router, default is `admin' for password and username is blank (nothing).

Step 3
After logging into the router select Setup. Set Internet Connection Type to 'Automatic Configuration (DHCP)' option. Under Setup, click on MAC Address Clone tab. Enable it and click on "Clone My PC's MAC". Do this from the computer which the cable modem was directly connected the last time. This will place the MAC address of your computer into the router. Save settings and reboot the router.
Step 4

Click on SAVE SETTINGS and then on REBOOT THE DEVICE including the cable modem to apply the new configuration.

If you are having difficulties accessing the Internet, you need to:

- Log into the router and go to Status page. Note what IP address it is getting on the WAN (INTERNET) interface. If the IP address you see under WAN (INTERNET) appears to be in the same range you are using on your network (e.g. 192.168.1.x), you will need to change the range you are using on your LAN to something different, e.g. 192.168.88.1. You can do this on your router under Setup > Basic Setup. Note that after changing the IP of your router you will only be able to access it through its new IP, e.g. 192.168.88.1.

- Uninstall your antivirus/firewall software (sometimes disabling or closing the software is not enough) and reboot your PC. After establishing the Internet connection through the router, reinstall your antivirus/firewall software.

Hi,
You may want to enable the DHCP reservation feature of the router.
What is DHCP Reservation and how do I configure it?

What is DHCP Reservation?
A DHCP reservation is a permanent IP address assignment. It is a specific IP address within a DHCP scope that is permanently reserved for leased use to a specific DHCP client.
You can configure a DHCP reservation in your DHCP server when you need to reserve a permanent IP address assignment. Use reservations for the DHCP enabled devices like print and file servers or other application servers which always have the fixed IP address on network.

Step 1: Access the router's web-based setup page. For instructions, click here
Step 2: When the router's web-based setup page appears, click Setup.
Step 3: Click on Basic Setup.
Step 4: Make sure that DHCP Server is Enabled. Then, click the DHCP Reservation button if you want to assign a fixed local IP address to a MAC address.

Can´t I access the web-based configuration

Step 1 Verify physical connectivity by checking for solid link lights on the device. If you do not get a solid link light, try using a different cable or connect to a different port on the device if possible. If the computer is turned off, the link light may not be on. Step 2 Disable any internet security software running on the computer. Software firewalls such as Zone Alarm, Black Ice, Sygate, Norton Personal Firewall, and Windows XP firewall may block access to the configuration pages. Check the help files included with your firewall software for more information on disabling or configuring it. Step 3 Configure your Internet settings. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double-click the Internet Options Icon. From the Security tab, click the button to restore the settings to their defaults. Click the Connection tab and set the dial-up option to Never Dial a Connection. Click the LAN Settings button. Nothing should be checked. Click OK. Go to the Advanced tab and click the button to restore these settings to their defaults. Click OK out to the desktop and close any open windows. Step 4 Check your IP address.
