It may have bad backlight inverter board or worst case will be bad lamp assembly. Learn more here www.insidemylaptop.com to get some ideas what's involved.

No backlight showing

If the LCD has no backlight and the display works on an external monitor, the a LCD replacement is the likely answer.
You can get LCD and inverter for about $60

When i turn on my dell latitude D505 the backlight

Either the video cable has been damaged or unplugged or the video processor is malfunctioning. Check this by connecting an external monitor. If the video is all there then press the Fn(function) and F4 key. This should switch the video from the external monitor to the internal screen. If this doesn't happen or if the external monitor shows no video then the laptop needs to see a reputable repair perso or check my website www.micromendllc.com

Help! my screen doesn't come on and my laptop keeps rebooting on its own. The screnn comes on when I start up the computer but then it goes out....it does work with another monitor. Also, the computer...

Two seperate issues I think.
The fact you can get an external screen to work indicates a problem with the backlight or inverter or both..A qualified technician or TV repairman will be able to test these and confirm.

The reboot is possibly a hard drive issue.

With the external monitor plugged in, boot to safe mode and do a hard drive disk check, see if that resolves the issue with the rebooting problem.

If it does not bypass the hard drive by obtaining a linux live CD, and setting the cmos to boot from CD. If this works without rebooting (the software is run from the CD), then the issue is with the hard drive and you might want to get any valuable data off and saved to a usb stick.

You could then try seeing whether the issue is hardware related or software related by booting from a recovery disc and at the stage where windows looks for a previous installation, select Repair, this will reinstall windows files

If this does not solve the problem, it could be a number of things from bad Ram to more major motherboard damage.

I would like to hook a flat screen tv up to a Dell latitude D505 laptop with an Intel 855 GME graphics controller. The TV screen is black. I have the latest driver. What can I try?

Most laptops have a video-option:
* output only to the internal screen
* output only to the external screen
* output to both screens

Set your screen-resolution to 800-by-600, which your TV should support, and then "toggle" the option to choose "output to both screens'.
