Thank you for such a prompt reply. However, I have already looked at this website and I find it far too complicated for me to understand. Can you simplify what I need to do to be able to convert a Sharp FW500 Font Writer file to MS Word? At the moment, I cannot open it so I cannot save it in a different format etc. Thanks.

1 - create a folder called Font_Writer_files wherever you want, preferably in  C:\ Program Files.
2 - go to the site and download the fwwp2rtf.exe file in that folder.
3 - connect your USB Drive to the pc and copy the .wp files to that folder.
4 - right click on one and select Open with then Select Program; in there go to Font_Writer_files and select the exe you downloaded; make sure the Always use this application option is selected and then choose OK.
5 - from now on all you need to do to convert a Font Writer file to rtf (which you can open in Wordpad) is to double click on it, the converted file will just appear next to it.

To make it clear, download as in Save, not Run.

Thanks again for such a prompt and detailed reply.

I have done 1 and 2 on your recommended list without difficulty. However, as previously stated, I cannot read the Font Writer files on my disk in drive A and so cannot copy them to the Font Writer Files folder in C:\Program Files on my laptop. When I click on drive A; where the disk with the Font Writer files is (with USB connection to my laptop), it says:
YOU NEED TO FORMAT THE DISK IN DRIVE A: BEFORE YOU CAN USE IT.
If I then press "cancel", I get the message:
A:\ IS NOT ACCESSIBLE. THE DISK MEDIA IS NOT RECOIGNIZED. IT MAY NOT BE FORMATTED.

My understanding is that if I format the disk in drive A:, I will lose all the Font Writer files stored on it.

How do I get round this problem so that I can do 3, 4 and 5 on your list?

Thanks again for using language I can understand,

    Philip Steel

This means that the floppy is formatted to an proprietary format which is odd, it should have been formatted in DOS. In that case you must identify the format (it should be listed in the manual). If you can't then most likely it will be impossible to read it in Windows.

In that case your only remaining option is to put the floppy back in the Sharp and connect it to the Windows pc with a Serial to USB cable then open My Computer , the printer should appear as a new disk, locate the files there and copy them.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Great news - the problem with the format seems to have been a question of using the correct floppy disks. The Sharp Font Writer 500 uses the older double density (DD) disks, not the newer high density (HD) disks. Using DD disks has enabled me to follow your list without difficulty, and I can now convert the WP files to MS Word. The problems experienced were due to trying to use HD disks! Many thanks for your help.

    Hi,
Chances are you're using Acrobat Reader to read the PDF (portable document format) file.
You need Acrobat "Writer" (aka Distiller) to actually make changes to a PDF file, as the reader can only read the image file itself.

    Hi Graham,
Your Portable USB 3.5 diskette drive uses a pretty old technology that would come with software or drivers needed to run it. You would need to check on your device manager on control panel. But I would advise you upgrade yourself to better storage devices like the flash drive or the CD/DVD USB portable drives. They are a bit more expensive, but the technology is newer and have less issues. Let's face it, the 3.5 diskettes are getting pretty outdated. Don't you think so?

    Cheers & Kind Regards
