The pull start rope does not seem to be attached to anything. It just pulls out very easily, and the motor does not engage.

Either the recoil spring has come unwound or broken or the cam-dogs that engage the engine are defective, you need to remove this cover to find out which it is

Why is the rope starter not engaging the motor how do i fix it or do i need to return it

Try pulling the rope slowly until the starter engages the flywheel (you should feel when it engages) then give a good pull to start the engine. Don't give the rope a quick hard pull in one motion. You will probably need to do this three or four times before the engine starts. Of course push the primer button the number of times called for in your engine instructions before trying to start the engine. If you still don't think the starter is engaging the flywheel if would take it back where you bought it if it's new.

Sounds like the starter dogs are broken. They are little plastic teeth that engage to turn the engine when you pull the cord. You'll need to replace the whole starter assembly to fix this.

I seem to have the same problem. I can easily pull the rope on the Cub Cadet but won't start and seems to have to compression. Is this something that I can fix on my own?

1st make sure you have spark at the plug by removing it and pulling over the motor, then drain and replace gas and install new plug if you do. The new blend of fuel is only good for a few weeks of shelf life. Ifyou plan on storing a 2 cycle motor use marine stabile in it or it will not start.

Pull rope broke. attached back but cant figure out how to make the rope recall work

The recoil spring has to be pre-loaded about 5 turns, even when the rope is fully returned. When you pull out the rope, you increase this tension, but if you are starting from zero, there won't be enough spring tension to fully recoil the rope. Wind the rope on the spool, then rotate the spool about 5 turns in the direction that would "push" the rope out through the hole. Now put the rope through the hole and put the handle on it. If you got the tension right, it should be sufficient to easily hold the handle up against the hole.

If you think the rope pulls too easily the engine may not have enough compression. Consider doing a compression test or a leak-down test on the cylinder.

Doesn,t engage with engine

sounds like the dogs and or springs are worn. When you had the cover off the machine did you check that the dogs would freely move out when the rope was pulled? They some times stick and will not engage.

Starter cord will not rewind after being replaced. The string will rewind in the housing before it is attached to the motor but not after being attached. How do you pre wind the springs?

What I do is the following:

Remove the old rope ( what is left of it)

Wind the starter rope pulley about 8 or 9 complete revolutions after I am confident that the spring has engaged the starter pulley

Hold the pulley in place ( align the rope hole in the pulley with hole in the starter housing

Insert the rope and tie a knot, pull the rope back tight against the pulley

Pull the rope all the way out and hold slight tension on the rope and release the tension on the pulley but still holding the starter housing

Starter spring should pull rope into housing... good luck
