The price of vacuums these days are falling all the time - esp on EBay. This sounds like there's a foreign object or simply dust which has managed to get into the motor thus causing the burning smell or that the roller brush fly wheel is loose and causing friction against the motor. For the price of replacement however you should contact the customer services of Eureka to see how much it would cost either for an engineer or a line diagram to open up the vacuum and do it yourself. Sounds like the motor does need to be replaced or inspected if the pin which holds the belt isn't moving and the burning smell comes out.
Either way this problem can occur if the vacuum has been treated roughly or dropped, or a design fault and usually repair charges mean a new vacuum would probably be more cost effective.

Spinbrush not working on eureka as1104

If the belt is intact, the brush roller ends may be so jammed (usually with hair) that it cannot rotate. Also, if the brush roller cannot rotate, the motor shaft may be rotating in one spot on the belt and eventually will burn it out. The solution in the case of the brush roller is to remove it and check for free rotation. If the ends are binding, the brush roller will have to be disassembled to remove debris.

Eureka burning smell

Hi, it's Cindy from Crucial Vacuum.

Since you have replaced your Eureka 4870MZ 9200 Proheat 2x vacuum's belt, the issue may either be caused by your roller or the position of your belt. It sounds like as soon as your vacuum is lowered, the belt is either slipping or wear on the end caps is causing your roller to stop. This will cause the burning smell since your motor is now straining against the abrupt stop. Try taking off your roller and checking the conditions of the end cap or try to reinstall your belt. I have included an instructional video: http://youtu.be/rji0fl9hytY

Eureka Boss 4870gz shuts off (thermal protector) after 2 or 3 min

wiggle the cord while running the vac. if it cuts off from that, then you most likely have a bad switch or cord. if the motor was bad, you would smell it. it smells aweful.

My Eureka The boss Smartvac Model #4870 roller brush won't turn even on the highest setting and the belt smells hot. we took the belt off. How can you tell if it needs replaced?

Just by what you explained I can tell that it needs to be replaced. The belt doesn't have to be broken to need replacing, if it is stretched and worn then it will slip on the motor shaft and not turn the brush roll and get hot. Here is a link to the belts you need and the manual which has instructions:

Motor smells like it's burning. Upright Powerline Model 5847. Have kept filters clean and cut entangled hair from the rollers. Have had vacuum for about 5 or 6 years.

The burning may be coming from the roller drive belt if the roller is jammed due to debris build up or has seized roller end bearings. Remove the roller and belt and examine both for damage. The roller, without the belt, should spin freely by hand. Replace the belt if it has a burned spot as it will fail shortly. Hope this helps.

I have just changed the belt but I continue to get a burning smell on my Eureka 4870 vacuum.

check if you have the correct belt for the machine, that model doesn't use normal belts.. If it isn't and R-belt then you have the wrong belt. It needs to be a that specific belt or it will not work

Eureka 2961 BVZ no suction, burning smell

I have the same vacuum. The burning smell is letting you know that your belt is either broken or about to break. I have had mine for a year and have had to replace the belt 5 times. Now I have to replace the brush roller 'cause it broke under normal use. My next vacuum will be a Dyson Ball.

How do I to change the belt on an eureka altima 12?

the belt is on the bottom right (looking at it from the front). the Eureka website does have the manual for download, http://www.eureka.com/service/manuals/80244.pdf

With the vacuum flattened (straightened) out, turn it over and remove the back roller cover, (2 screws) once off, the roller should just pop out on the opposite side (opposite from the belt). Don't forget to turn the roller to center the belt once you have it on.
