ARE YOU USING WINDOWS XP...IF THATS THE OS THEN JUST REPAIR THE OS WITH WINDOWS XP CD BECAUSE WHAT LOOKS IS YOUR MBR (MASTER BOOT RECORD) HAS GONE CURRUPT. AFTER REPAIR THE SYSTEM WILL BOOT NORMALLY AND YOU WILL NOT LOSE ANY DATA.

How do i restore my hp pavilion dv 5000 to factort setting?

There should have been a recovery disk created or included when you bought a laptop. Insert disk if you have it and restart your computer with the recovery disk in the CD drive. Make sure all your documents and personal data are backed up. When the computer restarts it should start restoring your computer to the factory default. There will be a wizard to guide you through the process.
If there is no disk or got lost, then follow this steps:
1.Save any files or folders on your computer with flash drives. Drag and drop files onto the icon of your flash drive.
2.Go to "Start" > "Restart" to reboot your netbook.
3.Hold down "Alt" and "F10" when you see the logo on the screen. The recovery menu will load.
4.Hit "Enter" and then "Next" to see your recovery options. Choose "Factory Restore" to set your computer back to factory settings. Follow the instructions on the screen.
5.Choose your time zone and language when the customization menu appears. Reboot when you are prompted.
6.Restore your saved files from the flash drive.

hope this helps,Goodluck..pls response with your rate and testimonials below for further issues..thanks

The boot partion is damaged,You will either need to get the install disk and run the recovery or get a tool disk with fixboot,scandisk,etc...Or if you can tap F8 while rebooting and start in safe with command prompt,You can try a few things,
    1. SFC/scannow
    2. fixboot c:
    3. Chkdsk
    4. fixmbr
#1 is the system file check
#2 is for fixing the boot partion
    #3 Checks the hard disk
#4 Fixes the Master boot record
