Question about Samsung HCM5525W 55" Rear Projection Television

Replacement convergence chips

When replacing the stk392 convergence IC chips, should one upgrade to the 11o, 150 or 180 version? THey have higher power ratings, but I don't know if they are direct substitutes. Do they require any resistor changes?

I have this repair to do this week, and want to order the right ones.
I posted this question in reply to an other query, but thought I should start a new question thread.

Thanks in advance. This is my first experience ith Fixya

Thanks. I need to get into the set, will take a look and get back.

Last service was done by the repair guy, I have never been inside it before. Can you help me with the best way to get to the board?

Does the front panel, under the screen pop off, or is it best to go in from the back of the set? The set is sitting in a built-in cabinet, about 6 inches up from the room floor, so I am going to have to round up help to get it out of the built-in to get to the back.

okay you need to go into the back of your set as soon as you take off the back look about dead center and you will see 2 big heat sinks and your ic's will located on the heat sink I looked up your number and you have STK392-040 for that model and that is the highest you can go that tv. chances are the last person who repaired your tv may not have put on an adequate amount of heat sink compound and that could have caused your ic's to go out prematurely you need to replace both IC's and I will post you a link where you can get new ones also step by instructions (pic) also you get free online tech support where they will help you with any help you need while installing your new ic's

they don't put a fan on them because usually they would interfere with operation of the tv they would get video lines but as far as the grease you would be better off getting the grease at your radio shack that sight don't have the grease and plus radio shack has it for about $1.29 for a small tube and thats all you should need. thank you anything else I can help you with just holler

The value of the resistors should not be changed (either resistance or wattage) as their job is to self destruct if one of the chips shorts.

It is very unusual in this set to see more than two of the resistors bad.

FYI: the 150 chip is a higher current device but will have no longer life than the original as the problem is that the heat sink grease drys out and this causes the failure.

The original resistors are metal oxide type and flameproof or carbon resistors should not be used to replace them.

Let me know if you have questions.

Convergance problem on lower half of screen.smeared red and orange double vision, but only on bottom ofscreen.top appears out of focus, but not double visioned.

Howdy,

The TV has a convergence problem; the IC’s for that circuit will need to be replaced. The part(below) Number is from Toshiba, they provide good advice on replacement parts. Make sure what type of IC's your TV uses first. The cost for this repair runs around $450.00 or more.

Replace the defective Convergence Output IC Part Number
23905094 (STK392-110) using the revised “T” version IC Part Number
23135090 (STK392-110T). When Convergence Output failure is
detected, it’s recommended that both IC’s be changed to the “T” type IC
version. Inspect the Convergence Output IC’s for the “T” type version as
shown in Figure 2. Replace the Convergence Output IC’s using the “T”
type version Part Number 23135090 (STK392-110T).

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.

JVC AV48WP30 convergence ic

I'm in the process of trying to replace both convergence IC's in my JVC also. I was able to buy both IC's (they look like black semi-rectangular components with 20 pins sticking out...like a computer chip only much bigger) at a TV repair shop for about $15 each. They were clearly labed STK392-110 (but could be 150 or 180 if you wanted to upgrade).

Stk392-110 chip replacement

stk392-110/150/180 all have same fit, form function except the 150's and 180's are basically upgrades for they're more stable (more heat tolerant than the original 110's); I'd buy the 150/180 myself; you can get the stk392-180 for just under 10 bucks on eletronix.com.
