Look for shorted out transistors and blown fuse, it is almost the same as 1740, also inspect the caps.

what you need to do is check the VGA cable if it is damaged. try replacing a new one. Hope this helps.

Pls how can i play my DVD player with my hp 1730 lcd monitor i'v tried connecting through VGA but its saying ''out of range'' what do i do? Help!

The resolution (most likely the 1080p HD) is too high for your monitor

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00477225&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=&prodSeriesId=346693&prodTypeId=382087

. You will need to access the dvd player's menu somehow and reduce the resolution to one that is supported: ideally it should be the 480p SD one that your player surely supports. The exact procedure is in the manual.

Model FPD 1730 -power button shows green, but no raster,no sound all other circuits do not function!

The backlight inverter circuits may have failed, check all the caps and the fuse in the power supply-inverter board first.
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Why would the Gateway FPD 1730 17 in. Flat Panel LCD Monitor turn on,,then go right back off,,if you leave it unhooked for a few days then it will work for a short time than quit again

This sounds like a typical Capacitor in the Power Supply fault. Some people take them apart and replace the capacitors, however I recommend that you get a "Quote" for repair, as these often "Chain Fault" and I have seen a lot of disappointed would be fixers.

My fpd 1730 moniters brightness and contrast are terrible, and i cant get the controls to work

nonnie707, It is very possible that your monitor's internal or external (lay on floor) "switch-mode-power-supply" has a problem. Prove that your pc is working by connecting KNOWN GOOD monitor to your pc!!! If you are not electronics technician then you will need to question Gateway as to warranty service or possible swapout for a REFURBISHED unit if your unit is deemed as premature failure. May cost $ for swap. READ my FIXYA profile and that of other FIXYA TECH's (buddymc, budmrtn) for more options as to "what to do"!!! Remember, If very strange and weird things start to happen (occur) with "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp" backlit LCD display, the first place I would investigate would be the units "switch-mode-power-supply" Good luck with the repair. 12fixlouie

My hp 1730 lcd screen is making a humming sound which seems to get lower when i turn down its brightness but doesnt go away any suggestions?

That sounds like the inverter that powers the back-light. Unless it's really annoying I would just live with it. It's probably more expensive to repair than to buy a new similar sized screen.

Monitor comes on momentarilly, then screen turns black. when power is turned off and back on again, screen comes on for a second, then goes black again. Is this a bad monitor?

The only problem that causes the power on and off is a bad power supply. Go onto http://www.ebay.com and search for the monitor (power supply). My dad's old LCD screen had a bad power supply, but I found my old printer power cable (HP PSC 750 All-in-One Printer), and the monitor turned on successfully. It's not a bad monitor, unless the PSU hookup is like the PC ATX/Baby-AT PSU cable, then it might be the issue. Monitors before 2004 or 2005 have the ones, like the HP PSC 750 uses. The monitor is either defective, or the power supply is dead.

p.s.: check the voltage, amp usage, etc. on the PSU for the monitor for better results.

Screen going black, green LED staying on

Check to see if the image is Dimmed. Chances are the power supply on the FPD is either dead or not supplying power to the back lights.
Your problem is the power supply or the inverter on your board, you can replace it and it will be fixed.
Easy Fix REALLY EASY FIX
(inverter is what supplies power to your backlights. A lot of the times the reason a monitor goes black and the green power button is on, is because the backlights shut off. in most designs of the 1730 the inverter is embedded on the power supply. That is most often the case on this problem. Power supply/Inverter=Replace it and you will have a spanking new looking nice monitor working again. :)

No Power On at all

What it sounds like is the Power supply on your FPD is bad. If its making a High Pitch Sound, A circuit or piece of your power supply is failing. It would need to be replaced in order to get it working.

Suggestion.
You can repair this easily if you have another FPD 1730 lying around that doesnt work you can replace parts, but its best if they were made around the same time because certain models have 3 boards(video board, inverter, power supply) But most have two boards (power supply, video card)
They are easy to replace and maneuver if you want to give it a try. Open the FPD and see what kind you have. If anything you might be able to find a part online.

Good Luck,
I hope this helps
