Question about Garmin GPSMAP 60CS GPS Receiver

1 Answer

I have a Garmin 60csx that won't power up

The unit's been working fine for the 2 months I've had it.Today it froze on me and would not power down so I removed the batteries. After replacing the batteries it won't power up at all. Is there a hard reset to this thing? Or is there possibly something else I need to do.

Any help would be great!

I have a GPSmap 60CS (bought new 2005) that will not power on either after working just fine for 3 yrs. Replaced with new batteries and all! Seems like the on/off button is the culprit - may try to open and get to the button to see??

The screen fades away every time I try to power it up with the memory card in it. It works fine with the base map (no memory card)

On 5 months old 60CSx pressing power button turns on the screen. It seems to work just fine acquiring while the power button is held down. However, all the other buttons are disabled. When releasing the power button the screen display fades away. Seems like the processor fails to latch the "power-on" state. This is the same with or without SD chip, on battery or USB power. Talked to Garmin last night. They had me reload the software while holding the power button, did not help.
Good thing it's still under warranty, but this does not make me feel too good about buying this unit. Will this happen again after the warranty?

On my GPSmap 60CSx the screen fades away after powering on - just like the battery is empty. Changed battery and used USB power. Always the same. When removing  the 2GB micro SD memory card then it comes up. Replaced the memory card and now it powers up fine. Seems that the memory card is damaged or causes a short circuit.

My device has seemed to have lost its ability to acquire satellites. Any suggestions? It's Garmin GPSmap 60CSx. Thanks.

I would try a reset and firmware update first. To Reset the unit hold the Page and Enter keys down while you power up the unit. hold them down until you get a prompt asking you if you really want to reset.

Garmin has a free software called webupdater. this will put the latest software in your unit. If there is a GPS chipset software available please apply that also. It will be in the list when you run webupdater.

You may want to try an external antenna also to see if an internal connection came loose.

How to Transfer Maps to GPSmap 60csx

You have use the unlock wizard to install the key that is provided with the software. When I bought my Mapsource CitySelect, it came with two keys. The way Garmin does it is, you can install the software as many times as you want on as many machines as you want, but can transfer the maps, data, etc ONLY to unlocked devices. Last I checked Garmin wanted $75 for additional unlocks. Some data is not locked, like Topo maps and some tide points since this data is obtained (by Garmin) from the gov't, which is free for us (wel, minus taxes we pay). Contact Garmin support, they are very attentive.

Black Map - shows only cursor, North pointer, and data fields.

Try a hard boot on it. Remove the batteries for 1 minute, then re-insert them and try again. If this doesn't work, contact Garmin at

Garmin 60CSx - Cant find satellites

Try a re-load of the chipset driver. It is available from the Garmin website. I find that it occasionally becomes corrupt.
You can check by entering the "Main Menu" then "Setup" then "System" then press Menu and choose "Software Version".
If the "GPS SW Version" is 0.00 then a reload of the chipset driver will correct the problem.

Cheers.

Garmin gpsmap 60csx won't acquire satellites

I found the solution that fixed my 60CSx. You need to make sure you have the latest chipset installed on your device. Go to

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/downloadsUpdates.jsp?product=010-00422-00&cID=145&pID=310

and download the chipset type G ver 2.9.

After you have loaded it on your 60CSx, you should be good to go. Just turn it on like you normally do and now you'll see your device retrieving locks w/ the satellites.

Let me know if this helps you out.

Garmin gpsmap 60csx won't acquire satellites

Go to the Garmin Web site's home page, avoid staring to long at the hot chick and click on "On The Trail" .. "Mapping Handhelds" .. scroll down to the second row far right and click on the 60CSx. You will then see the 60CSx page, look to the right and click on "Updates & Dowdloads", on doing so you will now see four downloads to choose from. The one you will need is "GPS Chipset Type G Ver. 2.90 as of Nov 27, 2006" if you follow this you shouldn't have any problems. If however you do i'll keep an eye on this page and try to help, this is my first GPS and also had the same issue.
