Hi

It is highly probable your red [Magneta] Printhead is clogged.
Magneta [red] is one of the three primary printing colors;
You need to clean the red printhead.

2. The LCD will ask "IS QUALITY OK? 1. YES 2. NO"

a. Press STOP/EXIT to return to the "Date and Time" display.

3. Evaluate the Print Quality Check Sheet.

On the Print Quality Check Sheet each of the four colors is represented by a slanted square pattern made up of 96 individual blocks. The colors should appear in the following order from left to right: Black - Yellow - Cyan - Magenta.

NOTE: Cyan is the light blue color and magenta is the pinkish color.

My mfc-240c won't print red, even with a new cartdrige.

Try running a few cleanings on the color.

Press the ink button and select cleaning,, do about five cleanings. Print the ink quality test page (from the ink button as well) and see the quality if it improved.

If it still doesnt print its possible the ink is clogged and may need servicing to replace the printer head

MFC210C can't print in blck

I had a similar problem. The printer had indicated that it was out of black ink. I didn't have one on hand, so, for more than a week I couldn't print anything, because if you are out of any one of the four ink cartridges, it won't print at all. That delay in replacing the black ink cartridge apparently was enough time for the printhead to dry out. Big Mistake! I contacted Brother's Tech Support and they suggested I run the cleaning cycle and try to print a test page. Still nothing printed. They had me run another cleaning cycle, and another, and another. Finally, after the fourth cleaning cycle, something started to show up on the paper. They had me clean it two more times, six in all, and it was back to normal. From now on, if it says one of the ink cartridges is empty, I change it yesterday. The major disadvantage of all of this, other than not being able to print for awhile, is that this procedure used up about 1/2 of a brand new black ink cartridge.

See if there is a printer software setup option that will allow you to set B/W printing only. If not you may be out of luck. Could be this particular print device requires all colors available.

Ink jets clog after periods of non-use

You need to run inkjet printers regularly. I expect your brother is right - for once?

If you can't get them clean, replace the cartridges, and print a test sheet at least, every week or so.

You may get away by standing the bottom of the cartridges in windex, or other mild solvent, for a couple of hours. It may save a few teaspoonfuls of ink, but the initial prints will be rubbish ;-)
