You need to increase the weight on the end of the arm to apply more pressure to the stylus. It will either be a screw or you just turn it. If there are numbers on it try it around 2.

Have a Rockola Model 481. Arm swings over when record drops but as soon as it swings over to start position it resets.

There are a couple things that could do this...one would be if the reject bottom was stuck in or the wiring going to it shorted out, take an ohm meter and make sure there isn't a low resistance across it..The other thing I can think of is the reject switch on the tone arm is closed or out of adjustment and thinks the tone arm is at the end of the record so it rejects as soon as the needle sits down on the record

The tone arm gets about an inch in on the record, and then the needle starts sticking. I have tried 5 different records, including brand new ones, and it does the same thing.

Inside the turntable, find the point where the base of the tone arm goes through the top and inside. There is often an adjustment that controls the range of the tonearm. If it is an older TT, it likely got out of alignment. Adjust it so the arm moves freely, from the tonearm rest, to the end of the record, and picks up where it should (if it's semi-automatic at least). Best to use an old record you don't mind scratching as you do the adjustments. Every time it sticks you are damaging your records slightly.

THE TONE ARM ON MY ROCKOLA 459 SLIDES OVER THE RECORD WITHOUT PLAYING.

Hi
It sounds as if the tone arm has become unbalanced. Make sure the turntable is on a firm flat horizontal surface and at the opposite end of the arm from the needle there will be a weight and a means of altering the position of weight on the tone arm. This weight keeps the needle on the record but only lightly when positioned correctly. If positioned too far from the pivot post the needle will as you have experience skip virtually straight across the record. You need to adjust the weight so that the needle just sits in the groove and plays without being too heavy. It is best to use a record you are not too worried about for this testing as the test record can sometimes get scratched.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers

Tone arm keeps returning to rest on Crosley CR249

Hi, Try this. with it turned off. Lift tone arm across a record to the run out groove and set it down. Now power up and hopefully it will reset itself. In all honesty I would sell it and get a decent old school player. John. Styluscity.com

My tone arm has suddenly started skidding across the record surfaces. Its a brand new turntable and was fine till yesterday !!!

Generally the cause is one of 3 things. 1 Damage to the stylus or dirt. 2 Lack of pressure to the stylus. 3 Anti-skate control set to low.
First check the stylus you should feel it sticking in you finger a bit. 2 Has the weight on the end of the arm become lose? Adjust for the correct tracking weight of the cartridge. 3 Check the manual for what the anti-skate control should be set to.

I have an old Califone 1400 all records skip new needle

There's not enough pressure to keep the stylus down in the grooves. Increase the weight (on the end of the arm).

I just got this unit, and tried to put on a record, but the needle just goes strait to the center and wont actually play the record.....any suggestions???

the tone arm need adjustment by a techician or you could try a new needle.

When testing use a record that is in good condition but not one you like.
