Question about Maytag MAV7700 Top Load Washer

Open Question

Greetings, I Have a maytag cloths washer MAV7700AWW. The drive motor will turn on with no load and loudly hums with no movement with belt on. Ckecked the transmition and water pump - they move freely. Took motor out and found what looks like a capasator mounted near the windings. it's about 1/4 inch thick, rectangular in shape, 1 3/8 inch by 1 inch. It has 2 stabs for staykons on either side of the 1 3/8 inch sides. The number 801 is on the 1/4 inch thickness and obliterated numbers look like 20MA0? on the top. Is this the capasator for the start or is this motor a start winding motor?

Yes there is a fuse in the dryer. The black circular thing is a high limit thermostat. Beneath it is the thermal fuse. It is smaller (dime size) and is mounted to the right side of the heating element housing. It is alittle tough to see and get at. You must use the original Maytag part kit.It comes with a new high limit therm. and fuse.

Check and make sure the seal at the bottom of the washer is not wore out. Alot of times you will get grease from the bearins and drum assembly if this wears out.

SOURCE: maytag top load washer won't pump water out=intermittent problem

You have a belt driven pump on this machine.
Maytag redesigned the lid switch for this machine because of this problem.
Try a new lid switch first.
It is possible that the problem could originate from the timer. Which would mean a new timer.

I believe the lid switch will correct your problem.

The drive motor which spins the drum is connected to the drum by a rubber belt. Sounds like the belt is burned through. Make sure you can spin the inside tub by hand to verify that the tub can turn freely before you replace the belt. The hum is from the drive motor just spinning freely.

I have a Kenmore cloths washer, model #110.24642300. The other day it filled up with water and stopped working. If you try to turn it on now, it does not do anything. But you can hear a small hum or...

The belt may be in place but it appears to be loose and slipping. Probably worn out. You hear the hum because the motor is running but the belt will not let it drive. When you have it apart make sure the part the belt is driving turns by hand.

I have a 6 yr old maytag top loader washer that does not wash or spin. It filled up with water and then stopped working. The power light is on but it does nothing . Any suggestions?

There is plainly no drive to the drum, it could be a broken drive belt or a dead motor.

Is there any humming from the motor?

If all is silent it could be the motor has died. If there is any sign that the motor is turning, then the drive belt could be gone.

Remove the back and look at the drive.

Alternatively the driver circuit board may need replacement.

My wife said the washer made a loud noise and now it doesnt spin or agitate

Check the drive belt from the motor for breakage. Test the driven pulley for relatively free movement. It may also have broken part of the transmission!

Maytag washer will not spin. motor overheats and drum won't turn

If it has a belt try loosening the belt and see if the transmission and pump will turn and are not stuck.
If they are they will have to be replaced. Try the motor and see if it turns freely with the belt loose or off. If they all turn freely check motor.

No belt on your machine. Sounds like motor coupler that joins motor and transmission is broken. Very inexpensive part but a few steps involved in getting machine disassembled Look up YouTube video on replacing motor coupler on Whirlpool washer.

hi there,

the humming is the motor trying to turn, which means it works. since you did not mention any error messages, it could just be a belt that slipped off the pulley. have you taken it apart yet?

it definitely worth fixing.
