If your using different shims everytime I doubt the starter is the problem.Does it engage and turn slow or does it spin fast like the small gear is not engaging on the flywheel Have you cleaned the battery terminals. Have you tested the battery. A simple test you can do at home on the battery is hook up a 12 meter and if the voltage goes below 10v right away when you crank and the engine does not turn, then the battery is shot. Also alot of times the ground cable on the battery will go bad so a simple test for the battery terminal is use jumper cable and clamp to the negative side of battery and clamp the other end to the engine. This will give the battery a direct ground.

Why does my 1999 Ford Expedition eating starters after replacing valve cover, removed cruise control box but it is back exactly the same?

Its your starter shims. Put shims in , what is happening is your starter gear is remaining engaged even after it starts thus it tears up the starter and the gear. It may take 2-3 shims. When you replaced your first starter did it have shims? I am willing to bet it did. Give it a try and i bet this fixes your problem. Good luck

After installing a rebuilt starter , when i try to start it , the solenoid clicks very loud 2 times, it will start on the 3rd try . almost think it is hitting the flywheel . have they ever used shims on...

Yes. Most starters come with shims. More than likely that is exactly what you need to do is to shim the starter. More than likely the bendix is hitting the flywheel. Just as you said.

2001 VW Jetta keeps refusing to start without tapping the starter with a hammer. It has been taken to 2 different auto shops, and we have had a total of about 4 re-manufactured starters and 2 brand new...

you may have to add shims to the starter, remanufactured starters sometimes are not the right replacement part, unless you put the metal shims in with it. the shims adjust the placement of the gears that turn the flywheel during the start sequence. it's a hit and miss operation sometimes, don't give up!! you can purchase those shims at auto zone or advance auto, or just about any parts store. also, just to make sure you're not getting a bad ground add a ground wire to one of your starter bolts, ground it to your frame. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

Before spending any more money you need to check for excessive end play in the crankshaft and if that is the cause then the bearings need to be replaced.NOTE:Ford starters do NOT require shims, you want the gears to mesh deeply as possible,

Starter makes a grinding noise. and wont start changed starter and have the same problem. changed crank position senser and it worked for a while. changed it again but didnt fix the problem.

if the starter is making a grinding noise when you turn the key, it's one of several possiblites. 1. Bad Starter. 2. Bad flywheel. 3. You need starter shims that fit between the starter and the motor. Most starters will bolt straight up but sometimes the gears get too close so you need to shim them apart.

Solenoid on my focus is clicking but stater is not turning over. When the bolts are loosen the starter will start the engine. I think the starter needs shimed, but not sure this is the problem.

You are right. Shim it out a little until the starter turns the engine freely. It's a try it and see process. Install shims one at a time because if you shim it out too far it will strip the teeth off the gears in time. Hope this helps.
