Hi,
There is a kill switch under the seat that makes sure you stay in the seat if the mower is running...my bet is that the switch is malfunctioning and the vibration of the motor is causing it to short out...get a new switch, they can't be that much...

Hi, I have a 13.5hp Briggs & Stratton motor which starts and will only run on choke slow rpms and mild smoke.

check the point where the fuel hose goes to the fuel tank
there is very fine filter in the hose that could be blocked preventing full fuel flow
only running on choke indicates insufficient fuel flow

Won't start but did and stalled out won't start at all now and oil filler cap smells like gas

If the oil cap smells like gas, one of the injectors may be flooding the cylinder and the crankcase. That would not be a filter problem.
Check the spark plugs to see if they are wet.

Sovereign xc 375 very difficult to start, getting spark, fresh fuel, oil and new spark plug - no change. Any suggestions?

Is your spark plug wet when you pull it out? If so then it may be fludding on you, If it's dry then your carb may be gunked up from old fuel setting in carb and lines it also can plug you fuel filter. after checking all these, check your compression and also take your spark plug out and look inside the hole at cylinder foe bad scores or scratches in the wall of the cylinder, you should also pull muffler off and check cylinder that way too, you may be low on compression.
Another thing you could try is your air filter, is it plugged with sawdust, take off and try that , then try carb clean short blasts into carb and try to start, then work choke back and forth keeping it running to help **** some fresh gas through carb, all else fails pull carb and dissasemble and clean. Good Luck

My string trimmer will not start

Possible solutions:
-Kill switch is shorted out-check the wire and connections.
-Buy a new plug.
-Primer bulb needs to be replaced.
-Fuel filter needs to be replaced, and it's located inside the gas tank so it's a bit tricky to replace.
-Try starting it without the air filter attached.

Is it possible an incorrect mix of gas/oil was used (or straight gas) which in turn ruined the motor?

Tractor starts then stop running

It will either be the stator that needs changing or the carb needs to be pulled off and cleaned

This sounds too easy of a solution but I had a like ptroblem with my Craftsman. I loosed the gas cap a bit and the rough running and stalling stopped. he vent on the gas cap that contains a turn over interrupt valve was plugged causing the gas not to flow. I took the cap apart and cleaned out the vent hole though cleaning the holewith a paper clip would have worked as well. Anyway..it fixed my problem. I think my dirty hands of deris deposited the matera in the vent hole when filling with gas.

Lawn Tractor won't start Craftsman LT1000 17.5 OHV

The starter bendix is not engaging properly the bendix pushes the starter gear into the flywheel gear when the starter spools up, it may need minor lubrication.
It sounds like the engine is not getting fuel as it should, the main jet may be restricted from varnish if she stumbles under a load especially if the plug tips are white after running for 1/2 an hour.
Remove the float bowl and clean the jet, make sure the fuel is still good, gas that smells like a library is more like varnish and less like fuel.

Poulan 6.75 Lawn mower will not start

Remove spark plug, clean and dry. Replace plug. Remove air filter. Spray WD-40 into carb opening; one second blast. Turn over engine, (pull handle). Engine should start briefly and run for 3 seconds.  If not, you are not getting spark to spark plug. If engine starts, you have a dirty carb and you can buy a rebuild kit from manufacture.
