Using an invisible zip foot my machine jams after a few stitches. It doesn't jam with any other foot, and when I sewed with the foot on a scrap of fabric with no zip as a test

Make sure that the needle is not too close to the zipper coils. Also, that the needle is not hitting part of the presser foot. Sounds like the needle is most likely encountering the zipper coils which are deflecting the needle. Move the coil further away from the needle.

When I put the presser foot down and begin to stitch, the needle just keeps sewing in the same place, and the presser foot won't allow me to easily move the fabric.

You might want to see if the drop feed control is down. There's a switch (for my Singer machine, you have to take off the removable sewing table/storage, and the switch is behind the machine)...if the drop feed is down, you can't see the "teeth" as I call them which grips the fabric.

Another idea is to back stitch (reverse sewing lever) a couple stitches and then try sewing.

Make sure the foot speed control is hooked up correctly. https://wiki.artisansasylum.com/images/0/0f/Sewing_Machine_--_Singer_3116_--_Manual.pdf This is the manual for your sewing machine model you posted. Good luck.

The needle does not move when the foot pedal is used.

Make sure that you pushed the bobbin winder all the way to the left.

I can't remember how to make the needle position on my 1630 Bernina stay either to the left or right so that I can insert a zipper with my zipper foot. Can you help?

HI Evelyn,
sometimes its just the little things that stop your sewing project; so annoying isnt' it.

According to the manual I've found, this stitch width inner knob is turned to move the needle position. The outter part controls the zig zag width, so just move the inner knob to move the needle.

Hope that makes sense to you. Good luck finishing your project.

What is pressure foot on sewing machine. where is pressure foot

This is the foot that comes down and holds the fabric layers under the needle.

There will be a pressure foot lever to raise and lower the pressure foot at the back of the sewing area, it usually operates vertically, although some makes have a lever that works horizontally.

The pressure foot needs to be lowered BEFORE you start stitching as it activates the top tension and also helps with the stitch formation by holding the fabric firmly as the needle moves up and down.

You can read some general sewing machine info at www.sewing.about.com too.

Singer TT600A needle is moving, but stiches are unformed. I've tried everything. I've already changed the tension and did everything in the manual repeatedly.

Make sure the needle is installed with the flat side of the needle shaft to the back of the machine.

A sewing machine should always be threaded with the presser foot up. This opens the tension control so the thread can "seat" into the control.

When a sewing machine is threaded with the presser foot down, the tension control does not open to properly accept the thread.

If the machine is already threaded, lift the presser foot and pull about 6" of thread through the needle.

Last resort: the machine needs to be taken in for service. Sometimes the stitch is not forming because the timing needs to be adjusted.

Sounds like the feed is your problem. Most likely you need a different foot. Check the bottom of the foot - it should be quite smooth to allow the dog feed to move the denser layers along smoothly. Hope this helps.
