Spoken Address Problem with my TomTom Go 720

The Spoken Address and Spoken Address(Dialogue) buttons are only shown in grey on the 'navigate to' screen and I can't activate this facility. I bought this unit in Australia where I live. Can you help me?

Exactly the same problem. Worked fine before the map update and was a feature that pushed me to this unit. Is there likely to be a fix?

I've also got the same problem. It was a good feature that I used all the time till they "tomtom" took it away by me downloading the 2008 map.

I have the same problem here. No spoken commands after the map update...
What a sneaky pack of mongrels taking that away!
That is an advertised feature of this unit.
    Where to from here?
On the plus side, I can finally operate the 720 from the Tomtom Home software on my mac.

    Hi Shaz29

I've read in other forums re this problem that you MUST have firmware

version 7.221 AND North_America map version 7.10 for this to work.

Before I try this fix, does it still apply only to North America map v7.10 as I have the Australian maps v720.1868 and I'm not sure where I find what firmware I have.

Use Windows explorer or some other file manager to view all folders and files on your docked (and powered on) Tom tom unit.

If you don't see a folder in the root of the unit called ASR, then create it.

Now, in the folder ASR, you create a text file using Notepad. Just put a 1 in it, nothing else. Save the file as support_asr.dat and make sure in Notepad when in the Save as screen, you have selected 'All files' as the file type .

Finally, to make sure, in Windows XP, goto Control Panel-->Folder Options-->View tab, and make sure the option under Advanced settings window for 'Hide extension for known file types' is UNCHECKED.

How do use tomtom

TomTom's GPS devices provide consumers with portable navigation solutions. Download maps, view turn by turn updates and listen to spoken directions on trips across town or across the country. TomTom has a variety of GPS products, but basic use and inputting destination information are almost identical across the board. If you're just taking your TomTom out of the box, you'll need to perform a few extra steps to complete set up. I am listing the 7 steps to use TomTom below;

1. Ensure your TomTom unit is fully charged. A full charge requires approximately two hours. Power the unit by pressing and holding the "On/Off" button for approximately two seconds. Make sure you are in an unobstructed area. Wait for the Tom Tom to power up and acquire a satellite signal.

2. Answer the on-screen questions to set up your device. The questions only appear if this is the first time you've used your Tom Tom. Otherwise, the driving view and your current location will be displayed.

3. Tap the center of the screen to open the main menu. Tap "Navigate To" and then tap "Address."

4. Choose the option that describes how you wish to enter the address you are navigating to. You may tap "City Center," "Street and House Number," "Zip Code" or "Cross Street or Intersection." To enter an exact address, choose the "Street and House Number" option.

5. Type in the requested information by tapping the letters or numbers on the screen. As you type, matching town and street names will appear in a list format. Choose the correct option from the list when it is displayed by tapping it. If prompted, enter the house number by tapping the corresponding numbers on the screen. When you are finished, tap "Done".

6. Select "Yes" or "No" when asked if you need to arrive at a particular time. If "Yes" is chosen, follow the instructions to enter in the desired arrival time.
Finally, follow the on screen and spoken directions to reach your destination.

How do i change the langiage of my Tom Tom 720 Go ? i have tried resetting it but does not reset the language. Also how do i set my Home address please?

To change language:
See my other post on this subject: the steps are also applicable for your device.

Basically: 'Change preference' (look for Spanner image Icon) -> Scroll right Arrow until 'Change language' (look for Flags image Icon) -> Select English -> Select an English Voice
To set Home address:
''Change preferences' -> scroll right to get 'Change Home Location' -> use 'Adress' to enter new address or 'Recent destination' to select a recently entered 'navigate to' address. Hope it helps. Let me know how you go and good luck.

No Assisted Speech Recognition icons

Technically, ASR is not officially supported on the 720, so their is no guarantees. But, first make sure you have the latest application installed via HOME, 'Update my GO'.

Then, open Notepad and type the number 1 ("1"), without quotes, in the editor. Save this file as '' (again, without quotes). It's important that you change the extension of the file from .txt to .cab. Then copy this file into the 'ASR' folder on your TomTom device. Allow your TomTom to boot up and try it again. Also, the icons will be greyed out if you haven't selected a country/state.

Spoken Address problem with my TomTom GO 720 GPS

i had the same problem, On the new aps with the latest software v8 this is disabled as tomtom dont advertise this feature in Australia. Phone tomtom cust support and ask to lodge an official complaint. The guy at tomtom said if there are enough complaints from owners they would look at supporting this feature. I see it as a safety feature so removing it is a step backwards for tomtom.
Hope this answers your question
