The main cause for dvd players to not be able to read the discs and give you error messages such as "bad disc", "disc not recognized", etc is due to the optical lens being dirty or the discs themselves are scratched or dirty. There are a few more things that can cause similar problems, but these are by far the most common.
There are two ways in which to clean the optical lens, either manually or by using a cleaning disc. Using a cleaning disc is much easier and faster. Cleaning one manually requires you to open and remove the cover and the lens can be difficult to get to.
The following links from my tips and tricks will give you more detailed information on how to use both methods of cleaning the optical lens. You can also review an easy way to clean your cds and dvds as well at the following link. I would also like to provide you with some additional information about common mechanical problems with dvd players in case you need future information about problems.

I hope this information helps solve the issue you are having with your dvd player. If you need further assistance please feel free to ask and I wish you well.

If you would not mind, please rate my help. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You

Just had this happen to me last night. The unit was brand new and playing dvds perfectly. I decided to go through some older VCDs (mostly 2.0) that I had and it played the first one fine for a few minutes. So I put in another and it played for a bit and the image suddenly stuck/frozen.

I've tried ejecting and powering off/unpluging the unit several times and all I get now is the "Bad Disc" message.

    Even with regular dvds.

Not sure what to do now....

It's like the lenses or optical laser is stuck or something.

    Any ideas?

Keeps saying err disc wont load

Check and clean disc and try a known good disc, if problem presists, buy a laser disc head cleaner and if that doesn't work, you have a bad disc drive. Also check region and if it +or - readable

Machine won't load disc. Keeps saying loading

Either a mechanism problem or a problem with the Optical unit inside (optical pickup) being dirty or bad.

No longer loading dvds

You may have a bad laser. First, make sure the laser assy. travels back and forth easily, then make sure the table the disc sits on spins freely. If it still isn't reading, load a disc and immediatly flip it over to it's top and see if it works. Working or not, still a bad laser.
