It is the fan thats right on top inside the outside unit. I hear a buzzing sound but the fan does not come on and it does not get cool inside the house

  • Anonymous May 23, 2008

The main fan (that you can see on top of the box) will not cut on. The compressor will cut on, but the fan does not move. I tried to trip the breaker for the A/C; then hit the reset red button on the side of the unit, and still nothing on the fan.

About last month, the unit was not turning on AT ALL; I called someone, and he told me to reset the breaker, and then hit the reset button. That fixed the problem.

    But its not working now.

ok condenser fan. check the combination capacitor first the buzzing sound could be compressor trying to run. also verify that no wires are frayed or broken. with the power off to the unit take off the top and try moving the fan blade it should move with some play. if it does move o.k try replacing the combination capacitor. but before doing that, touch the fan motor make sure it's not excessively hot that means a faulty fan motor

You need a 6.3v capacitor to get the fan going i had the same problem.

There is no such thing as a 6.3volt capacitor. They are rated in ?F (Micro farads), not in volts. I know this post is years old and the OP has his problem long fixed but I felt the need to clear up the misinformation posted here.
The motor could be faulty but there are other causes for4 the symptoms. A leg of the 220 could have dropped, the capacitor could be bad/weak or a bad wire could stop that motor as well. Each could cause an over heated motor and do not mean the motor is bad.
*CAUTION* Anytime you are deal with a capacitor you need to be extremely careful and not touch the terminals of the top, (The parts the wires connect to". A capacitor will deliver a large shock to anyone who does not respect it, it may be small but it can kill you. After cutting power to the condensing unit you need to cross the terminals with a screwdriver to discharge the capacitors electrical charge. Cross them with each other and to the case metal to ground each one. Safety first!

You do not need a warranty card for your warranty to be valid. Your installing contractor provides the labor warranty and the factory provides the warranty on parts. All the necessary information to make a (parts) warranty claim is embedded in the serial number of your unit. As for a manual you should contact the installing company or visit the Weatherking (Rheem) site to request this information.

Fan not blowing

Even when the power is off at the unit outside the thermostat will supply power to the contactor of the outside unit. This may give a hum or buzz as you stated. If when the power is on to the outside unit the fan tries to start but only hums the motor may be bad. Does the compressor start and run?
