It sounds like you may have a broken motor coupling. This is the most common cause of the symptoms you are describing. Whirlpool manufactured top loaders use a motor coupling in place of a drive belt and are known as "direct-drive" systems. No agitation, or spinning, associated with a grinding noise are the usual symptoms. The washer should still have the ability to drain, however.

The following link explains how to access the coupler and replace it, if necessary:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574231-replacing_a_motor_coupling

The part number is included with the instructions I provided. Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you need. If you do not wish to order parts on line, use the part numbers I provided and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. The coupler is usually sold as part of their in-store inventory. The average cost of a motor coupling is only about $15.

Another cause would be a failed gearcase (transmission). I would recommend checking the motor coupling first, however. If the coupler is still intact, please let me know. I can give you guidance on how to replace the gearcase, if necessary.

If you have any questions, or if the symptoms I describe do not match the problem you are experiencing, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

AGITATOR WILL NOT SPIN, WATER WILL DRAIN BUT NO SPIN

Does your motor sound like it is running in the agitate or spin cycle or is it quite? If the motor makes no sound, then you need to replace the lid switch with this part.
If you hear the motor running in the agitate or spin cycle but you don't see any action, then replace the motor coupler with this part.

Whirlpool washer sm 8280867 - agitator wont turn but sounds like motor does?

sounds like the drive belt has slipped off. Does it try to go through a full cycle? Can you manually rotate the agitator or is it seized. Is the electric motor running, or does it just hum? empty the drum, unplug it and open up the back. Look for a belt that is hanging. Good luck

Our Whirlpool WTW5550sq0 does not agitate any more. Initially it sounded like there were a few gear cogs that were stripped, but it still agitated (mostly). Now no more stripped gear sound, but no more...

Hello there:
Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor. Drive pulleys The motor or transmission drive pulley may be worn and unable to turn the drive belt. If so, replace the pulley. Transmission The transmission could have either of these problems: Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may not agitate properly or at all. The transmission may have a worn or broken gear, or some other internal problem. If you suspect a transmission problem, you may have to call a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it. Many washers produced by Whirlpool® use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. If this happens, you need to completely replace it.

My Whirlpool Washer (top load) will not go into the rinse cycle and then finish the rest of the cycles and any setting.

If it fills up and starts the agitation mode (you can hear the motor running), open the hood to verify it is agitating (center post turning back and forth). If it is not phisicaly agitating then you most likely have a defective coupler. (couples the motor to the transmission) They are about $20 and require you to tilt the washer on its back to gain acsess to the bottom at the motor.

Won't agitate or spin

If you mean that when the unit should be agitating or spinning the motor is running, and you lift the lid causing the motor to stop running, it sounds like the coupler.

Won't spin

Faulty Direct Drive Coupling (Whirlpool / Kenmore / Roper / Estate)

The Direct Drive (motor) Coupling may be broken.
Many Whirlpool/Kenmore brands washing machines utilize a small, relatively inexpensive direct drive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other.

It can wear out over time or fail under overloading conditions. This protects your transmission from excessive loading.

All functions operate normally except the machine will not agitate.
The agitator is driven by a couple of different methods. The first is the agitator is splined and slips onto the matching splines of the agitator shaft from the transmission. The second is the use of a bell coupling which is splined to the agitator shaft as well and the agitator snaps onto the coupling. If the agitator does not agitate, first remove the agitator and watch the agitator shaft to see if it is working properly. This will require a small load setting of water and the machine set to run. If the agitator shaft is working properly, it is either the splines on the agitator or the bell coupling that is defective. If the agitator shaft does not work properly, the problem is in the transmission.

Last the huming may be the motor is sized! Done, finished!
