Question about Makita Saws

1 Answer

Makita 9523NB angle grinder is suddenly suffering vibration and some emitted from motor before stopping. I have replaced brushes (original brushes were hardly worn) as 1 of the springs had little tension but the same problem persists. The grinder spins freely when the brushes are removed and also when inserted but as soon as it starts it vibrates badly. There is an insulation washer which is "Loose" I'm not sure whether this just sits in place or should be pressed onto the backing area of the grinder. Can you help????

You say it spins freely but is it smooth. If not it could be one or both of the bearings the armature spins on. More likely than not you have one or more fan blades broke or missing. Not much weight by themselves but at the speed these things spin the more blades broke off, the worse the vibration. You have to romove the brushes, take off the gear housing and remove the armature to check both the bearings and fan.

My makita 4.5"angle grinder produces alot of sparks at the brushes.what could be wrong?

lots of sparks means your brushes are used up, broken or stuck. Replace them. If that is not the problem, it could be you over heated the motor, very difficult to do, and the motor is about to die. Check brushes first. You can tell by examining your graphite brushes. Use a straight screw driver and unscrew the black cap that holds the brushes in place.

How can i replacethe carbon brushes on my angle grinder as they are totally and completely worn off

Buy the new brushes from the manufacturer. You already have the old ones out - put the new ones in the same way you took the old ones out.

My Makita cordless angle grinder (new, used once) BGA452 wont go, it starts then the overload light comes on and it stops? changed battery, still happens.

Obviously too late for you, but it may help others.
I had the same problem with a new Makita 18v lithium grinder and this worked.

Remove battery, remove brushes. Using good quality cotton buds, dip in Methalated spirit and insert into hole for brush down to armature, slowly rotate head of machine. Change cotton bud and repeat process, then clean the brush heads. Re-assemble and try. Note: Meths will dry completely leaving no residue, unlike turps etc.

My makita grinder was working just fine wile I was grinding it just quit on me and now it will not even start

You can try removing brush covers and brushes to check and clean as needed.I have a makita grinder and have to change brushes about every two years but I use mine a lot in very dusty conditions.I think that I would probably check on/off switch about first as I have had mine do exactly what you have and I replaced the switch and it's still working.I have had mine for 15 years.Great little grinders. If you feel comfortable doing so you can bypass swith to make sure motor is good. Best of luck and thank you.

first unplug the tool, next on the backside you will notice a screw, remove it and slide the cover back to expose the backside of the motor. gently move the springs that hold the brushes tight to the side and remove the brushes and replace. Make sure to replace the springs and then slide the cover back into place and replace the screw and that should take care of your problem.

Angle grinder eats carbon brushes

Yes, the rock dust is what's destroying your brushes and armatures. It gets sucked into the rear vent slots and gets to those parts and eats them away quickly. I don't know of any vacuum systems make by Makita but there are some companies that make them for their systems. Blastrac is one that comes to mind but they can be real expensive systems. I don't know of any grinders with sealed brush/armature systems, they have too much heat to disipate. To make your Makita grinders last longer make sure you are cutting with the side of the blade that directs the dust away from the case and try to have a strong airflow blowing the dust away from the grinder to minimize the dust taken in at the back of the grinder.

The grinder just stopped working

They are very simple inside, the only serviceable parts: if its not a switch/connection it is the motor brushes. Or the motor is defective.

It would only be the motor brushes if you had been using it for a longtime before and they wore down.

If it is new, return it for warranty exchange.

Hope this helps,

How do i replace the brushes in 9557pb makita angle grinder?

Take apart the rear portion of the case -- the part the cord enters -- two halves -- screws in side -- you'll see the brushes -- they are in holders held in by springs and plug into the winding.
