Question about Sony Handycam CCD-TRV68 Camcorder

1 Answer

I have an older camcorder that hasn't been used in a while. When I went to try to view the tapes made on the camera, I just get a blue screen with a white play arrow. The tape is moving inside though. It records fine. I've tried several different tapes all with the same result. The camcorder is a sony model CCD-TRV68 Any help would be amazing since I can't view my tapes!! Thank you, Lisa Bonanno

The video drum inside the tape mechanism consists of two sets of heads. One set for recording and one for playback. It's possible the playback heads are damaged, in which case the video drum will need to be replaced. It's also possible the video drum may simply be oxidized in and the camera only needs servicing and the drum deoxidized. I don't reccomend using "cleanning tapes" as they can sometimes do more harm thab good although you try. You might get lucky and this will solve your problem.

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if a blue screen is displayed when attempting to playback video from the camcorder.
  1. Stop the tape.
  2. Ensure the tape has been rewound to the beginning of the video recording.
  3. Play the tape.
  4. If the issue is not resolved, stop the tape and remove it from the camcorder.
  5. Clean the video heads of the camcorder using a dry head cleaning cassette.IMPORTANT: Follow the instructions for use provided with the head cleaning cassette. It may be necessary to use the head cleaning cassette more than once per session.

MiniDV camcorder.

Have you tried recording new video to a new tape and trying to play it? Your old tapes could have become corrupt.

What brand/model of camera do you have? What type of connection are you using to the TV? Composite or S-Video?

Thanks.

Tapes won't play

This is an indication that both data heads are dirty. In a digital camcorder both heads need to be operating correctly to obtain a full picture. Insert a new cleaning tape and run it for only 10 seconds or less, this should clear up the problem. Avoid using the tape that caused the problem. Do not use the cleaning tape for regular maintenance, this will damage the drum surface. Good luck to you! Joe Weibel Custom Electronics (customelectronics.org)
