Question about Coleman Powermate Premium Plus 6250W Portable Generator

1 Answer

I have a Coleman Powermate PRO-GEN 5000 (6250). It has been sitting for a year and the gas value was not shut off (oversite). When checking the oil, it smells like there is gas in the oil-is this possible?

When the engine sets for a long time the gas can seep bast in to the cylinder and their will be some gas you will need to change the oil and take the spark plug out and air i suggest you squirt a small amount of oil in the cylinder gas in the cylinder can wash out the lube to the rings and cause undo wear and start smoking turn the engine by hand slowly to allow lubing of the rings the gas seepage is most likely caused by a float that's not set correctly you may need to rebuild the carb with a kit around 20 bucks ans easy to do at least the clean it well to remove schlack that gas leaves behind when it dissipates and can cause issues.
replace with fresh gas and run the engine and it will smoke for a couple mins do to the oil in the cylinder remove the spark pug after running a couple mins and clean or replace the engine should be fine following the steps above. hope this helps

It will start for a minet then shut off and wont start till it sits for a half hour

Check to see if the fuel filter is clean or change it. If the screen in the bottom of the gas tank is clogged, that will do it too. If those solutions do not work, check the oil level and condition of oil, if it is low or dirty the low level switch will shut it down.

Have a coleman powermate 5000 gen. starts fine then dies like it is running out of gas. new fuel and filter is good. getting good gas flow.

Sounds like you may have a stuck float. It is inside a cup that hangs down under the carburator, there should be a nut and a serrated screw adjustment value. Put a empty coffee can under it to catch the gas and remove the nut the cup will fall off into your hand, you will see the float make sure it moves up and down on it's own weight. Sometimes they get old and stick it is held in place by a small pin (don't loose the pin) unscrew the adjustment pin counting how many turns it tales to remove, clean every thing with carberator cleaner, you may have to buy a new gasket for the top of the cup, they are very thin and break easily. Reseat the gasket in the groove it came out of, put the cup back in place and put the nut back on just an-off to make it good and snug, screw the value pin back in place counting the turns so it sits were it was before. Make sure the gas value is open and try to start the engine, at first it will fill the cup with gas then it should start up. If not you may have to disasseble the caberator and clean all the tine little ports, I have one that was so bad I just had to replace the caberator.

After a few years in storage (no fuel in tank or carb) and new oil, gas and plug, it will not start. No spark

There's a oil level sensor on that gen,if it doesn't "see" enough oil it grounds out the ignition. This is to keep you from destroying the engine due to no oil.If that's not it re-post and we'll try something else?

Old gas, gone bad from sitting. Drain all gas out and use carb cleaner in unit to clean. Add fresh gas.

Oil for Coleman Powermate 5000 PM0545305.03

Yes, SAE5W30 is just the right oil for this machine,it will take about a quart to fill it up to the bottom of the threads in the oil fill hole.
The engine of this generator is essentially just like a lawn mower with a fixed throttle setting. You should expect all of the same issues as any small engine that's been sitting for a while. Check the fuel tank for water/debris, check the carb for fouling, check the spark plug, etc.

If the generator has been sitting for 3+ years without running you may need to flash it to get any voltage out of it. If you get the engine running and it won't make any electricity ask me directly and I'll talk you thru the procedure.

I looked on www.powermate.com for an owners manual but they only seem to have the parts list, rats.

Regards,
Carl
