Question about HP Pavilion dv9000z Notebook

1 Answer

I have a dv9008nt laptop. It has been fixed twice in its 3 years of life due to what appeared to be video problems (they say they put in a new motherboard). Recently I observed a repeating diagonal series of unrecognizable characters/symbols. After a few boot attempts the computer seemed to work normally for a few weeks after this incident. It worked OK with an external monitor. Now it will not boot. The power lights up and the drive light flashes. There is no display. After a few seconds, it tries to restart and repeats the process all over. The external monitor does not work either. Now while I am writing this, I tried to re-boot again , but now it is working normally. I am in the process of backing up while the computer is still alive. Do you know what the problem could be? Is it some intermittant temperature related thing? While it was not working, I had thew HD checked and it worked ok. If this is too expensive to fix, can I put the HD in the second drive slot of another computer to transfer the data? What would I need to do to make this into an extended drive?

Battery won't stay charged and has been repalced twice since October

hi, you replaced the batteries twice? using the same charger, have you tried another charger ?, okay let me tell you about mobility scooter chargers, it quite complex but some chargers will charge your new batteries correctly due to resistance etc, it more complex than this however now as your batteries get older your charger maybe having a problem charging your batteries , not because they faulty, now this is due to internal resistance once again the batteries problem reappears within 3 to 6 six months , it could be just the batteries are not good enough , I have seen a whole combination of faults , please bear in mind there are some dodgy batteries out on the market....

so

1. first try another charger

We at CAAP Davao Philippines have a MGE Galaxy 3000 10KVa UPS with serial no. 13299-4. It was installed last 2003. We had three times replaced its batteries over the period of years, the latest was 2008....

On the Galaxy display you could see what is the remaining battery life time as calculated by the software. Normally after you replaced the batteries you are supposed to reset this counter using specific software by the manufacturer. According to your information you have replaced the batteries 3 times in 5 years period. This is not normal. Nevertheless since the last replacement in 2008 it appears that the battery are now reaching the end life, which is generally 3-5 years life expectancy.

I would review the following of the assumption that the UPS is fully operational and the charging system is working.

1. Do a load test or a battery impedance test to verify the batteries are good
2. I would look at the battery life time specification, whether it is 3-5 years, 5-7 years ect.
3. Check the room temperature, every 10 degrees Celcius above 25 deg reduces battery life time by half
4. Check the number of power failures/ duration of these power failures and if possible what load were on the UPS at the time of the power failures.
I hope this will help. If all verifications are to specifications, then most likely it is a software problem

Have a Dv7-1243cl with a Intel Processor. Took it to be fix by a computer man. He said the mother board was bad. I got a new mother board and put it in. But the computer comes on for about 3 sec and stops...

Sounds like there is a video problem. The most likely sources are a problem with the video card (gpu) or the display itself. I would guess that it's something with the gpu due to the recent motherboard replacement. This component is integrated into the motherboard. Some quick fixes for this problem is to reseat (take out and put back in) the battery or the memory (RAM). I would recommend trying that before calling it a bad motherboard.

Solo 9100 battery

Well, 8 years is an excellent life for any laptop battery. Being that old it will either be a nicad or nimh battery, both of which suffer from battery memory. There is very little you can do. Sometimes, charging the battery as much as possible, REMOVE IT FROM THE LAPTOP, put it into a plastic bag, seal it against moisture, and then put it into a freezer for 12 hours. Replace it into the laptop, charge it again, repeat twice more. If the battery has a bit of life in it you may be able to reclain SOME of it's capacity back. This is a last ditch effort, and should be carried out as a last option. That leaves either buying a new battery, this eBay link will take you to one

It's probably time to replace the whole laptop though.
Hope this helps

Green vertical line on LCD screen

Is this on a monitor or on a laptop LCD display?

Most of the time it is due to a hardware issue like a video card or the screen itself.

When does the line appear?
A. Is it there even with the monitor or laptop turned off?
B. Is it there during the OS logo / boot screen or does it appear after the OS loads?
C. If it is a monitor, with your system turned off go into the menu of the monitor by using the buttons on the front. Is the line there?

What you can do to try and fix it is.

1. Make sure you have all the latest drivers for your video card.
2. Change the resolution of the screen.
3. Change the frequency of the monitor.

If these do not fix your issue you may want to look at getting or borrowing a video card and replacing it if this system is a desktop. If this system is a laptop and the above does not fix the issue your best bet would be to put up with it or buy a new laptop to be honest.

Talkswitch 480 VS no longer shows caller ID Simply "out of area".Can this be repaired?

Call Talkswitch, they will offer a swap for another system and bill you $500 to do so. This happened to me twice. First swap was $250. A year later it is now $500. I was told this increase was due the end of the system life and a shortage on parts. My system is just about 4 years old. My next system will have telephone line surge supperssors inline with the telephone lines.

Black screen

There are only three issues it could be...

1. The ATI video card has become warped due to overheating which woulod need to be replaced. You can find them used on Ebay for around $65 or new for around $125.

2. The cable has become frayed that connectects the video card to the inverter board due to opening/closing the laptop. Like $7 on Ebay.

3. The ribbon cable connection to the LCD panel itself has started to come undone which is also a common problem. Around $125 on Ebay.

You can try pressing down above the F5 key to see if the screen will come back up.

-Please give me a thumbs up :)
