Question about E-Machines eMachines Desktop PC

3 Answers

Bought the computer new at wal mart. Did not even open box for 5 months. Opened it up tried to connect it to internet and couldn't. Called the company (emachines), ran me through some basic maneuvers and said it was not a hardware problem but was a software problem which was not under warranty. Computer will go on internet when started in safe mode. When system recovery done to go back to original factory settings, will go on internet for few days then does same thing again. We have installed no software at all on this computer. Believe it is a gimmick for the company to make money as each time we called emachines they transferred us to people who were more than willing to help us fix our new computer for a substantial fee. It's like it is programmed to have this problem so that we will have to seek expensive solution. Again, it is a brand new computer and we have installed nothing on it.

You did not say what the operating system was (win 7, vista, xp)
However its not uncommon for many peoples connections to loose status occasionally.

The normal way to try fix it is to power down the computer
power down the modem

If there is a router involved then this may have a great impact on connectivity and there are quite a few steps that can aid a reliable network
I am going to assume there is no router involved

Start the mpdem again and WAIT untill all the correct lights are on.
THEN power up the computer.

If you have internet then you know the issue is likely to be the modem.

If you are using wireless connections then again there are quite a few things that can cause disruption.

If you are linking in for internet via a VOIP type modem then once agaion there may be many different issues affecting connection

I will assume for all the above that you have your OWN internet service and are NOT using another persons or business to get a free ride. If that is the case you need to invest in your own internet provider.

I have had many e-,achines and NEVER had this type of issue or suspicions as you do so I can only assume it is a simple setting on the computer or other networking hardware (modem/router) than needs to be addressed.

Did you get any closer to solving the problem ?

Bob, yes, we have our own internet connection at home (DSL) and the computer I had before worked just fine with the same modem as does my laptop which is what I have had to use as I struggle with this problem. It is definitely an issue with this computer and not with the connection and of course, I am not computer savvy enough to figure out how to fix it on my own. When I bought the computer, i had no immediate need for it so I didn't have time to set it up until months later and by then, as I came to realize by looking at the receipt ("computers must be returned within 14 days") I could not take it back. Emachines was more than willing to help me fix my problem for 129.00 which I unequivocally refuse to pay (at least not to them) as this computer is new and has had NOTHING done to it. I will end up taking it to a local computer repair place and getting it fixed as I am more than tired of toiling with the problem. I will never own another emachine and would not recommend them to other consumers who, like me, may not be computer savvy, because of the lack of customer support. I called the internet service provider first before I called emachines and they advised it was a computer software problem and told me to call emachines. Thanks for your time.

If it connects in safe mode with newtworking you are bypassing the firewall like norton internet security.
If norton is EXpired it will cause that issue of not connecting to the internet but will in safe mode with networking.
Here is the link to remove norton internet security.
    ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    Good thoughts Kevin

Most NEW computers only come with limited time demos of antivirus etc.
Although it is a darned old question and the asker seems to have had problems using the site looking at the repeated comments. (FixYa problem not a user problem)

  • Kevin Smith Nov 14, 2010

I used to work for HP and the trial version of norton would expire and the only way to get on the internet was SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING that is why i made that comment and sent the link for norton removal tool.
If it had norton on it download this link in safe mode with networking and then run norton removal tool and when it is done reboot computer.

Sounds to me like it has a faulty network card. My best suggestion is to buy a very cheap usb wireless device like the one below.

And avoid the expensive repair fees in the future.

I'd try calling your ISP (telco or cable company). They will be of more help and generally don't charge for customers.

Fan is 5 months old. Removed the governor because light was flickering. Now the pull chain for light switch doesn't work after ONE pull. So we tried to replace the switch but couldn't get it out...

If this looks like your switch then yes, it's a generic part available pretty much anywhere ceiling fans/parts are sold (I've seen them in Wal-Mart). You will probably need small wirenuts or a line splice to replace with this part, but as it it a SPST which wire goes where does not really matter.

We bought the display model from Wal-Mart and the gasket between the two canister havles is missing.

I had this same problem when I bought mine, except it wasn't a display model, as far as I know... I bought it on clearance, and when I opened the box and read the instructions I realized that I didn't have the replacement ring... I contacted Rival, and they were more than happy to send me one. That's what I would recommend! Hope this helps! :-)

Then, it still is under warranty.

HP 5610v All in One Copy Fax. Several numbers on the keypad ( Fax) don't work. When you're trying to fax, the numbers 2, 4 and 9 don't work. The HP is only 6 months old, bought at Walmart. Called HP...

Chances are pretty good that it is indeed a hardware problem. I'm not sure how Wal-Mart handles their warranty services, seeing as it's only 6 months old you should still have the 1-year manufacturer's warranty for the unit. I would either give Wal-Mart a call, or even bring it directly to them and see how they want to handle the warranty service on it.

Wal-mart's computer care is a scam.

I work for the Wal-Mart PC Care program. The PC Care program is free, it provides assistance in installing a year worth of virus protection. Anything beyond that is on a pay for fee service. It does not replace the original Dell warranty (which as pointed out) you were under. The little card board disk hold clearly states that you should save your receipt here. The receipt can be generated again at the local store. A customer can also purchase an extended service that comes info effect after the original warranty expires. It is not a bad plan, but it does pay to read and know what the plan covers. You still need to contact Dell as you are under their warranty. Pre-existing conditions are not covered by any extended service plan.

one would surely assume that a product would last more than 5 months. of course you know not to put metal in a microwave, so the real question is, have you ever cooked bacon in it? I can assure you that this is a very bad idea, as the grease gets sucked up into the fan and distributed all over the sensitive circuitry inside the unit. mine actually caught on fire while cooking bacon, so now we are back to the skillet. in conclusion, the micron is probaly fried in it and it is not worth fixing. chunk it and get a new one.
