You need a few gig free space on your hard drive to run modern programs.
How much free space is on your hard drive. They recomend 10% minimum free space.
Go to add/remove and delete as much as you can.
Run a program like CCleaner

I didn't realize FixYa had dropped everything except the text of the error message (First-time user) - I thought I had added essentially the fuller explanation included in my later posting.
What happens is that everything is fine for 2 or 3 days - then suddenly I can't open .exes and shortcuts are unrecognized and trying to run Word brings up the 'not enough' message.
I've found that running IOBIT's Advanced SystemCare and restarting the machine fixes the problem ... for two or three days.
Thanks for your interest - this problem seems to be all over and many of the users report the same thing I do: plenty of disk space and memory ... just a dumb OS that goes weird.

If you find you are unable to run exe files and shortcuts, this is usually a virus/malware.
You will also usually get false security centre warnings.
Use malwarebytes in safe mode with system restore turned off to fix this

I just bought Microsoft Office 2010 so I could open some attachements from an email. I still can't get the files to open, something about free disk space. the file is a zip file. Please help, I

Sounds like your hard drive is filled to capacity. If so, defrag your HD. Are you running other applications. If so, your memory (RAM) may not be able to handle the input/output operations. Disable services and start up programs in system config.

Open the zipped file with Internet Explorer only.

Clean up your disk space.
Go to Start Menu Search Bar and write down "Disk Cleanup" ,click on it to start the program,Select the drive you want to clean. In most cases C:\Drive and make a cleanup. The program will scan for unnecessary files.Next click on cleanup system files.
After you free up space on C:\ Drive ,word will work just fine.
