Its used to set the unit to manual defrost as it does not have an electronic defrost timer when the ice in the freezer section gets too thick press the red button and the unit will shut of the power long enough to defrost the freezer

take care.

Is the dial to adjust temp coldest set at low numbers or high number?

The dial inside the fresh food compartment, the bottom compartment
set to middle or above (higher numbers mean colder). Usually 5 to 9 if it has numbers.

Freezer knob in the middle if it has one. (If you set a freezer knob to "colder" it cuts
off the cold air to the lower compartment). Hope this helps

Refrigerator less than two months old. Freezer side fine refrigerator side stopped working altogether. All food ruined. Who should I contact. purchased from Home Depot.

This is a very common issue, If the freezer compartment is cold and making ice the
problem is simply airflow from the freezer into the refrigerated section.
Typically when one senses the refrigerator is warm they max out the settings
on both dials the thermostat with its 1-10 settings as well as off for the compressor.
This controls the compressor and temperature.
The additional setting or dial is for colder freezer or refrigerator as well , However
it simply opens or closes a flapper door between the freezer and refrigerator boxes.
When that dial or setting is maxed , it closes and makes the freezer colder, yet leaves the refrigerated section starved for sufficient airflow to maintain a cold box in the refrigerated section.
Just set the dial that does not turn the compressor off to the middle setting.
One can leave the thermostat that does control the compressor in the max setting , just not the colder freezer setting, If you notice colder isnt colder refrigerator, Its actually colder freezer, A common issue found on 25% of all refrigerator calls a simple setting adjustment.
Its easy to think that maxing out the settings makes for a colder refrigerator, it doesnt, it makes a colder freezer and warm rerigeration section.
If a freezer is making ice, theres nothing wrong with the unit other than airflow setting.

My GE TFX30PP is constantly running and doesn't turn off. The freezer is very cold but the frig side isn't cold enough. A repair guy put in a new "cold contol" sensor but it didn't help.

I would also clesan the condenser coils off.

How do I set the temperature?

Hello Elise, The Dial should be set to the middle number three (3) to start with and allow for 24 hours of running before you make any adjustments, either up or down.

The higher the number the colder the fridge temperature will be. Just remember that it takes almost a full day for the fridge compensate for any changes to the thermostat. Also, only make adjustments in the temperature setting by only 1 increment at a time (either up or down) and again, allow 24 hours before making further changes.

If your fridge has the red button in the center of the temperature dial, that is the manual defrost button. So if you've got a build up of ice on the freezer section, just push it and it will defrost the unit for up 2-4 hours.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!
Merry Christmas!

Welbuilt Refridgerator (old) - Which way is coldest - 0 or 6?

Most controls work with the highest number being the coldest. Keep in mind that once you adjust that setting you should allow 24 hr for the refrigerator to "equalize" to it new set temp. Hope this helps

My Refrigerator is leaking a brown substance. Little at a time. Also leaking what appears to be water. Have cleaned coils. Also is there anyway to determine if refrigerator is accurately cold-like a...

Where is it leaking inside your refrigerator ? If it is inside your refrigerator at the back then it is likely a plugged defrost drain - there is a cup in your refrigerator that collects the water and sends it to the drain line at the back and at the bottom on your defrost pan for evaporation. if this line is clogged water will overflow and leak into your fridge. In newer refrigerators this line is enclosed and you have no cup in your refrigerator. See if you can locate the cup and wiggle it or remove it and push it back in sometimes it disloges the clog.

For temperature, normal freezer temp range is 0F or colder to 10F. Optimal is 0F (-18C), you can set it colder too this gives a better recovery time in case of longer power failures. For refrigerator 34F~40F, optimal temps are 34F, again for the same reasons, the colder it is, the slower bacteria growth - 34F is optimal, without freezing your food.

The dial in the Fridge has settings from 0-7. which is the number to get it colder, it is currently on 4 and the freezer is not freezing

The higher the number the colder it gets. But I think your problem might be something like dirty coils under the frig or the fan inside the freezer is not working. Let me know more info. ken
