Question about Brother MFC-7440N Laser Printer
These things are painfully akward at times. You're going to have to check all the drums and make sure the sheet of paper isn't 'rolled up' around it. But, before that. A faulty paper jam in those printer can be from a worn out paper feeder ( the little rubber wheel in the paper tray that pushes the paper to the drums) get to that.. sometimes it's as simple as dust.. but it should have a little texture to it.. if not find someone that sells those rollers for your printer. if it's dusty just wash it off with some mild soapy water.. rinse very thoroughly , and set it up to air dry (lint from paper towels and such will stick to the roller very easily and you'll be back in square 1) after it's dry toss it back in the printer and give it a whirl. Keep in mind there could be more than one roller in there and good luck. :)

SOURCE: paper jam message
Richie, I ve had the same message and was wondering why: You have to open the printer. You will find rest of paper near the left side gear wheels(where powercord is pluged in) which cant be seen from outside. Another point is that the encoder strip (foil paralell to printhead belt) might be out of position. The jammed paper hamight had pushed the encoder out of position. the encoder strip has to be fixed upon the printhead.

I had the same problem with a Brother MFC-8460 and called Brother's support line. The solution that worked for me was to lift the top cover where the sheets of paper go through when you fax. On the right of the black rectangluar piece with grey roller there is a slot in the tray with a black lever inside. The black piece was stuck down inside the slot and had to be popped back out. Once it was out I hit the stop button and it was fixed!!
