I got a JVC shelf system from a friend and she said the cd player did not work. I got it home and it worked fine for a while, now when I try and play a CD nothing. It starts out reading each disc starting at one two three. Even the disc select on top freezes up it is frustrating!!!!! I have tried making sure the unit was level, I have tried to use it with one two or three cds on the tray simply it will not read a CD.

Please try another good disc on your player. If nothing change , get your lens cleaned by cd lens cleaner. Repeat cleaning 2-3 times and retry it back. If still problem , please replace your lens with new one.
You could try a CD lens cleaning disc which will clean any dust off the laser lens. But it is possible the laser power can be low if it is an old player. this will stop the discs being read fence the fault No CD as it cant see the disc. This will mean either a new laser assembly or complete CD deck. Try the cleaning disc first and if that does not work take it to a service centre or just use it as a radio cassette in the garage.
I just had the same problem with the same model. Disc five was saying no disc and would not play any other discs. I opened the radio and found the the CD tray was missing a piece for disc five. You have to put the disc tray back into the holder to fix it. Make sure it locks in place and you should be able to get the rest to work.
