I have a B & S vanguard 20 H.P. vert. shaft, 8 years old on Simplicty tractor. Keeps fouling plugs. Clean or replace plugs and it runs fine for about 1/2 an hour then starts to miss, blacksmoke, and backfire. Checked everything. Changed air filter, fuel filter. Compression is 150 psi on both cylinders

Anti-foul plug adapters might be a temporary solution (treats the symptom and not the cause).
Personally, I would take it to a good, reputable, small engine repair shop that has verifiable references, and have them repair it.

I need help starting an almost new snow blower. I bought in December of 2013 and can't get it started for the first time this year.


I would make sure that there is new fuel in the tank. Most of the time the fuel in the tank goes stale. Ethanol that is used in gasoline now loses it potency over time and will not burn correctly. Evacuate old gas and put some fresh gas in the tank and try again. Place to start anyways.

Try looking at the Governor on the engine. You can usually adjust this out at the Gov arm by loosening and tightening back when smooth. Could also still be dirt in the jets. Make sure all the small holes on he carb are clear and check the float height too.

Spark plugs foul immediately


Fouled plugs may be caused by oil leaking into the cylinder. Does it smoke when running (cold), are you using up the crank oil. Black smoke is excess gas comsumption, blue smoke is oil burning. If your plug is fouled with black carbon, you are most likely running to rich.

Not sure what all you have done. Most problems are in the carb. Did you replace with fresh gas? clean the carb. check for spark and compression. use ether or starting fluid into the carb air intake.

yep its a briggs and normaly there very good ploders
if your john deere spluters and back fires it needs a good looking at check the valves first,,,a hand full of bolts and the heads off and if your carfull you can still use the same head gasket again,,,also check the carb there very finiky and need to be kept clean the air filter is a joke,,,but clean it anyhow and they like new plugs,,,every ten years or so? iv worked on 100s of brigss and stratons/vanguard. there good engines but there ploders not sprinters there ok in a tractor but no good in a tank there to darn slow

Briggs 14 HP Vanguard runs well until PTO is engaged


First thing u might want to check is the governor--Make sure the spring and linkage is hooked up properly and the governor is moving freely.

Tractor starts then stop running


It will either be the stator that needs changing or the carb needs to be pulled off and cleaned
