SOURCE: NAKAMICHI CASSETTE DECK 1 NOT PLAYING?

it has probably thrown the capstan belt and will require a new belt fitted. the transport relies on capstan rotation to engage play. a separate reel motor operates ff/rew and takeup funtions

Unit probably needs belts. Over time, belts may become slack or decompose into tar-like compound. In this case, the deck will need to be cleaned and belts replaced. Take to pro/tech

Check leaf switches and also, press play -- after a few minutes, feel motor(s) for heat build up. If it gets hot, either motor is bad of something is preventing it from rotating

Nakamichi BX 300 tape deck runs slow in play, belts and idler have been replaced

There is an adjustment in the motor that sets the speed however you need to have a frequency counter and speed alignment tape to adjust the speed correctly. There was also suppose to be oiling of the mechansm at the time the belts were put on.

Nakamichi bx 300 runs slow in play? Belts and idler have been replaced.

Need either Capstan motor adjustment with speed alignment tape or a new motor requiring the same alignmnet after the new motor.

My Nakamishi Cassette Deck 2 is eating tape. It switches off when it does, but how can I fix this? From the look of it this cassette deck has the same cassette drive as the DR-8. Is that correct?

It could be the take up spindle does not have enough torque causing the tape to bunch up after the capstan. If you open up the unit you will notice ether belts or rollers for the tape drive. If it has belts you can replace the belt after cleaning the pulleys. If it has rollers you may be able to clean them with a rubber cleaner (not alcohol which will dry the rubber and cause glazing). Make sure the capstan and the pinch roller is clean using a rubber revitalizing cleaner on the pinch roller. "Goof off" from a hardware store is great for the capstan if it has a lot of metal oxide on it.

Nakamichi BX2 will not take-up tape and play

This may be a reel sensor problem, or the rotation of one of the reels is stopping for some reason. Most of the time, these faults are mechanical. There can be worn belts, or drive wheels, or gears, and etc. Sometimes there are faults in the electronics where a sensor is not being read properly.

The unit should be properly checked to evaluate the fault.

Nakamichi BX-2 Cassette Deck Takeup Reel

I had sorta the same problem and I just fixed it. Mine was making clicking noises and jerking the tape causing speed variations and pitch changes, Uggghh. The FF, Rew, and take up functions are not belt driven like most decks. There is a little idler wheel between the motor and the take up axle. Take the whole transport assembly loose from the front of the deck...slide it back 3 inches . Take off the ground wire screw, and 3 screws holding the transport mechanism in place :...1 screw on top, 2 on bottom. Take the black front faceplate off of the drive...2 little screws. This exposes everything. The little idler wheel has a press on tiny, tiny piece of clear plastic holding it onto its little axle. Be hella careful. Use a tiny eyeglass screwdriver to pry it up and off. Dont lose it. Pull the idler wheel off. The rubber has hardened and slips. Pry the rubber rim off of the white plastic pulley using the tiny screwdriver. Put on an O ring that just fits. Scruff up the perimeter of the O ring with 220 sandpaper, Easy does it. Idler wheel goes back in, press on the little plastic retainer, put the black metal plate back on( 2 screws at top), slide the transport mechanism back into the front panel, secure with 3 screws, ground strap, replace cover. Clean heads, demagnetise, badda bing, badda boom.
