It is asking me for a product key and i've lost the cd containing the product key..what should i do??

You need to contact the supplier you purchased the product from.

The product key is essentially the license, without it you cannot do much.

If the supplier cannot furnish you with a new product key, you have then effectively lost the product

As per you description , I think after reinstalling the OS when you try to run micorsoft work its asking for the prduct key.
you can use the below tool to get the product key .

We can not give you product keys as it is illegal. I can either give you microsoft support which is.

To contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support, telephone +1-(800)-MICROSOFT

Or you can buy a new copy but we will not provide you a key.

You should contact your supplier (be it DELL or whoever) they should be able to work something out.

Microsoft has a page dedicated to such losses, it even has a list of contacts for OEM manufacturers...
