That passport would need to be reformatted to support vista. check the user manual on that item and try it again

Windows vista recovery cd I created won't install on new hard drive

Which software did you use to create the recovery disk? Is the recovery disk a CD or DVD?

Just to recover a vista system from recovery DVDs would require at least two DVDs. Your files would be in addition to this so I would be very surprised if you have only a single disk containing both the operating system and all of your files.

A simple recovery disk would only be useful for restoring lost operating system files to a hard disk that had corrupted or deleted files. It would let you restore to a new blank disk.

If the disk only contains a backup of your data then you would need to first install an operating system (Vista or Windows 7) and then install the backup software you used to create the disk and then you could recover your data from the disk.

Cannot load Vista

I dug out the Factory Restore procedure from the Dell website. If you can successfully get to the Advanced Boot Options screen with F8, there should be an "extra" item in the choices, "Repair Your Computer". If you select this, then you will be asked to select your language, followed by an Administrator login. After you log in, click "Dell Factory Image Restore" then click "Next"
If your hard drive has a bad spot where the volume information is stored, this will still fail. In that case, remove the hard drive, find somebody who can make a full copy of it ("Ghost" the drive; named for a program that performs that function; this copies hidden low level data as well as the files) to a new hard drive, and try the new drive. The volume information on the new drive will be corrupted also, but it should be repairable, and you might even get your original data back.
New hard drives can be purchased for less than $100. If your ghost and recover process succeeds, you should seriously consider getting an external hard drive big enough to hold the contents of your iMac and your new laptop hard drive, split it into two partitions using Disk Utility on the iMac (format one partition as HFS+ )Extended) for the Mac and the other as NTFS (you will have to do this format from the Windows machine; Apple is only allowed to do FAT formats for Windows), then use Time Machine on the iMac and Backup and Restore Center on your Dell (see article linked above) to make backup copies of each machine.

Hey there. I have a problem with an external harddrive. "My Passport Essential". When I connect it to my compute sometimes nothing happens and sometimes "Local Disk (E:)" shows up in my...

The problem might be a loose connection or bad configuration file (an autostart ini file that makes the hard-drive do certain things when plugged in) in the root folder of your hard drive. Are you able to connect to it sometime or it doesn't work at all? If you can read it, try backing up all your data and format the hard drive and copy back the backup again. But remember to copy only the needed files and not the system or ini files.

MacBookpPro osx10.4.11 doesn't recognize new WD passport

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-

Tried to Help but couldn't Need advise

If the disk runs on a fat 32 file system it can not take files that is bigger then about 4GB, so if the file is bigger you will youst get up a message that the disk i full, if this is the problem try converting the disk to NTFS.

Hope it helps

WD Passport Elite 320 - won't install autobackup launcher

The problems is this: at this point, Western Digital is not supporting Vista 64-bit with any of their related software. Granted, some things will still work while using the 32-bit version, but some won't, and the backup software is a prime example of the latter.

You might try downloading the latest version of the software from here:

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=204&lang=en

Chances are, it will still barf, but it can't hurt to try it out. An alternative is to use another backup application; the one included with Vista ought to work. I wish I had better news, and believe me, as a user of both XP 64 and Vista 64, I feel your pain.

Cheers

Nick

Corrupt File System

Well i guess that either your file system is corrupt or your disk is formatted into a filesystem that it's not supported by the backup programs. I don't really know what filesystem is your disk formatted into but usually the FAT32 and FAT16 are the most failsafe file systems for Windows.
So copy/paste the data you don't want to loose and then go to
My computer -> right click on the drive icon -> format and then choose fat 32. Then try backing up your laptop again.
