Do you have the latest version of Adobe Reader....if not get it. Then lookup manual for your product and get that too...Goodluck

Have you checked the ink level on the black ink cartridge? It's probably out. Or if it's a new cartridge, make sure the tape covering the connecter has been taken off.

In printer utility settings, you have to modify the ink cartridge settings and specify that printer should use only black ink cartridge. Click apply. Then press "stop\reset" button for 5-7 sec. and then release
it. Then it will work!

I have had problems with this printer, too. See my Amazon review here:
(Mine is the second one down).
The Canon MP270 does seem to have a few problems. It's not one of Canon's finest products, to say the least. It seems to be getting a reputation for problems, problems...
I gave up and bought a HP Deskjet printer instead. I know that's not a fix, but I found it was the best solution!
