I suggest to visit the manufacturer's website. If manufacturer has changed BIOS or Update the BIOS, the patches or new BIOS will be available there.

Changing the hard disk will not give you any noticeable performance gain, only some extra space. Just get the biggest you can find.
On the other hand your system could definitely be improved by a new video card. The best one, even a little overkill, for your system is something like

To download things you do need to be connected to the internet.

If it is not on the packard bell website, the only thing I can suggest is to try a driver finder program. Could find the right driver for it.

go to the NEC website, they bought Packard Bell about 5 years ago. Go to the packard bell section and look thru there, they use to have a good troubleshooting section. Depending on the age of your computer, it is probably obselete. One other way is when you boot the machine it will show your bios in the upper left hand corner. Watch the screen and don't get distracted, also it may take 3 or 4 times to get it.

you have not installed the soud drivers, it runs on modem sound, try to install the sound card or built in sound drivers.

have the sounds been enabled in the bios. ?
Did you run the motherboard drivers disk on your pc ?
