Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

Hi, I'm backing up the contents of my Powerbook G4 (mac - purchased in '05) on the Maxtor One Touch III external HD. It's been going for a day and a half now. Admittedly the computer is nearly full of photo files, but should I expect it to take that long? I need to use my computer, and it appears that it's not even close to finishing up. Is this typical or does the excessive time indicate a problem? thanks, Darlyne darlynemurawski@earthlink.net

No!
It should not take that long. Your trouble is it's a Maxtor drive. Maxtor all but went out of business. Seagate has bought the troubling company. Though Maxtor still runs a web site. I suggest you download Maxtors testing software. (Cick the Link).

Not sure how this will work for a Mac. You can also run Seagate's software. Last note, if your transfering data through a parallel port, it will be slow. Got a DVDRW burner? Try burning & see how lonk that will take.

Use your task manager to see if it is actually doing anything.Right click the task bar and select task manager,,,at the bottom of the task manager it will tell you how much CPU,Memory, and how many processes are running. You can look at the processes and see exactly which ones are using the CPU.Another way to get to the task manager is control+alt+delete click in that order and continue holding down each key untill you have pressed all the keys, then release all three at the same time.

I have a Maxtor One-Touch III 750GB External Drive that has worked well for over a year. This past weekend the icon disappeared from my desktop and I can't get it back. I'm running a MaxOS X 10.5.5 OS...

mine will also occasionally disappear. i have had to do a restart of the pc which gets it back for my 160 gb firewire external.
the blinking light may be indicative of the hdd going bad, though.

Hi kennithtang,

Lets troubleshoot this together. First, lets check and make sure the power cord is plug into the wall and to the external HD, second, make sure the communications cable (most likely a USB cable) is plug into a USB port as well. If this does not work, try plugging the USB cable into another USB port on the computer or monitor. Hope this resolves the issue. If not, then hopefully, the hard drive from the external HD is extrackable. Then may need to purchase an enclosure that in compatible to a 500GB hard drive.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi there, I think it may be to do with the format of the harddrive - see if you used the Maxtor in a Windows XP environment it would have been formatted to suit that OS.

Is the Harddrive formatted to NTFS?

Purchased Maxtor ONE TOUCH III. when I had XP. Now that I have Vista, mAXTOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. iS THERE AN UP-DATE? nEED HELP. Thanks Marty xmartico@san.rr.com

Hey xmartico,

If your recent update from Windows XP to Windows Vista has been the only major change to your computer system since you could access your Maxtor One Touch III last, you may simply need to reinstall the Maxtor software to resolve the problem.

Information provided by the manufacturer has suggested that if no password was ever set, the hard drive should work with Vista immediately with no additional work required. If you had chosen a password however, you may need to reinstall the software and reboot every time you disconnect/shut down the external drive, or disable your user account control (UAC). Please keep in mind though that disabling UAC is strongly discouraged, as it may open your computer to attacks by various malware programs including viruses and spyware.

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly recommend contacting Maxtor directly for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

Maxtor One Touch III

Download and run maxtor powermax, when you run the program it will idenify your hard drives, select your one touch and run the recertify, this will not erase anything but will run a complete diagnostic and attempt recovery of data to recertify as good. If the drive fails I have recovery software I can e-mail you.
