Question about Garmin North America GPS Map Update Maps Software
This is how we solved our problem while trying to download the new maps for our Garmin nuvi 260. Since this solution involves deleting files from your Garmin device, try this solution as your last resort. Deleting the wrong files may make your problem worse. Our Nuvi was basically non-operational and Garmin was closed for the long holiday week-end when we tried this solution so we figured we couldn't make it worse.
Our problem happened after buying the Lifetime update and while downloading the "US and Canada" maps with the "To Device" option selected, the download got interrupted. When we turned on the Nuvi, there was a message on the Nuvi screen "No Detailed Maps Found that Support Routing. The GPS Can Not be Used Without Them". The Garmin web downloader is supposed to check for interrupted downloads and start at that point but upon reconnecting the Nuvi to our computer, signing back on to the Garmin site, and going through the download instructions, we got a "not enough space" error message. We tried selecting other maps and each time, we got the "Not enough space" message. As we stated in the beginning, since our Nuvi was basically non-operational at this point and we could not wait for Garmin support be available on a weekday, we decided to delete files that were optional in the hopes of freeing up some space on the Garmin device. We deleted the optional voices and text from the Garmin device that were of no use to us (basically everything besides the English versions) but noticed that the available space on the Nuvi still did not increase that much. We went through all the files on the Garmin device drive but could not find the files that were still taking up over 600MB. So we set our Folder View options on our computer to "Show hidden files and folders" *and* unchecked the "Hide Protected operating system files" option. We re-opened the folder window that showed the Garmin device drive and this time we saw a hidden folder with a hidden file in it that was over 600MB. The file was dated 09/05/2010 and had a file extension of .chk. We deleted the hidden folder with the file and the available space on our Garmin device went up to over 1GB. When we retried the download from the Garmin site (all the way from signing back on), this time the download and installation started and continued all the way until it was successful. It did take over 3 hours to complete (we only have DSL and we were using a wireless connection) but at least, it worked and we had a working GPS again.
A few notes: when reconnecting our Nuvi to our computer, it sometimes took several minutes for our computer to recognize the Garmin device. We always waited for the Garmin Device drive to show up listed under My Computer before starting the download. Also, do not delete any files from your Garmin device that you're not sure are optional. We searched the internet to find out which files were optionals (basically voice and text files that are foreign to you are optional). We only deleted the hidden file with the .chk extension when we saw it had the date and time that was about when our download got interrupted. Our computer runs on Windows XP and to set the appropriate settings for the hidden files: Got to the Tools menu

I don't have a Nuvi 1300, only a 200 and a 215. You may want to try loading only the Continental US map. Not the whole Northern Hemisphere. It maybe that your Nuvi 1300 doesn't have enough memory to contain the entire map.
I did the same thing with my Nuvi 200 when I first got it. Was ready to drop it onto the pavement from my third floor balcony!!! Went out and bought a second Nuvi that same day, and did the same thing to it too. I was livid all weekend long.
By Monday morning I finally got with someone there at Garmin who walked me thru the process and explained that the Nuvi can't hold that much info at once. Only part of the maps.
