Question about Gateway GT5678 Desktop PC

2 Answers

Hello I have a Acer Aspire AM5640-E5520A Intel Pentium 2 QUAD, 2.4GHz with a MCP73PV motherboard and SATA drive. When I try to install XP (which I like better than Vista) the set up acts ok ,loading files, until it gets to "setup is starting windows"..Then I get the BSOD and a message saying STOP:0x0000007b I have tried to change the bios setting for the HD to IDE but I do not find anything about storage or AHCI. All i see is a place to change raid configuration. Raid is disabled. But i have tried it with raid being enabled. I am so lost. The XP dvd's I am using are legal. Thanks in advance

Let's just say this post of mine might help but please don't trash my rating if it doesn't. :-(

I think there's a good chance that XP is missing the recognition driver for your HD. Here's what's worked for me a number of times. I identify the exact model# of the drive and go to the manufacturer's site for the OEM RAID or 3rd party driver. You're looking for one @ 1.44 MB or less because XP is old enough to expect a third party driver to be inserted during Setup using the F6 option from a floppy disc. I actually own an exterior floppy drive just for this one function.

Using a computer with XP on it, I download the small .exe driver and install it to the floppy. Then just after booting up the XP install disc, I watch the status bar below because very soon it prompts to hit the F6 key if you want to install any 3rd party or RAID drivers. I do just that and a little further along the way, setup will stop and ask for the driver. You need to have the floppy drive connected. Direct Windows there and select the driver and ok Windows to install it.

If it's all in line correctly, Windows will immediately install the HD storage driver and complete setup. You can also make a boot CD that fools Windows into thinking it's a floppy but it has to be introduced with an exterior CD Drive.

Best Wishes....Good Luck

PS. If this isn't your problem, guaranteed it will be someone's. ;O)

PS...check the Gateway site for floppy size storage drivers too. Gateways are notorious for having proprietary drivers that fit on floppies to restore their machines.

SOURCE: Hello

First things first. I believe your computer has a recovery disk. Which is applicable to Vista. If you want to downgrade the operating system from Vista to XP you need to check your hardware settings. Now for this problem, my suggestion is try replacing your hard drive. Because as far as I know the hardwares installed in your motherboard is ok. But your hard drive is not in good shape. After replacing your hard drive perform your installation of XP. And then observe.
If problem still occurs, please let us know.

Maybe the Vista drivers will do. If the Win & drivers are not listed, then more than likely the vista drives are compatible.

On bootup win xp does not read hard drive... even a known good one. "cant find OS" even though it detects the drive is there in F2 I have even been able to format the HD. My question is .... Is...

Sounds like it might be a motherboard issue BUT the best thing to do is to put a known good working hard drive in that computer and try installing Windows from the cd. If it can't install then the motherboard is bad more then likely. You can also try swapping out memory and trying it in different slots as well. If somebody tried flashing the BIOS and the computer got shut off by accident, that can screw up a BIOS and render the computer useless.

My p4v8x-x motherboard cannot detect my sata dvd drive

Try resetting you're bios...other than that, try replacing the connector (not out of the realm of possibilities it could be bad or not seated properly.) Try plugging it into another connector. Chances are, resetting the bios will probably do the trick. Other than that, the drive may be bad.

Cannot reinstall new os, seem my hard drive is not detected by os

I hope its not Vista os, because if the driver is not in its database, it does not accept any new driver. Install XP first and run the Vista Upgrade adviser from microsoft to check whether your PC hardware will run Vista....sodeep

I CAN'T FIND THE RIGHT DRIVERS FOR THE MOTHERBOARD OF MY COMPUTER

That motherboard is made by Palit, their model N73PV. Drivers are here at Palit's site. (The SATA drives should work without any special drivers. You only need to install RAID drivers if you're going to use RAID configuration. Clear your CMOS and make sure the BIOS is setup correctly.)

Raid sys on p5k/epu

You are correct. The Asus P5K does support SATA RAID configuration. Page 4-14 in the user manual.
Congifuration [Enhanced]. Only real option is IDE. That does not mean the SATA drives will run like an IDE. The SATA's will function faster. In order to get RAID function you would need to have bought the Asus P5K Deluxe. http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=P5K%20Deluxe/WiFi-AP&SLanguage=en-us
