The L&TT support ticket contains drive configuration information such as whether hardware data compression is enabled or not.
Use L&TT to pull the ticket then look in the Drive->Drive Configuration section for details.
Here's an example:
|__ Drive
||__ Data compression : Enabled
||__ Current block size : Not available
||__ Detect WORM tampering : WORM not supported
||__ Reads after WORM tampering : WORM not supported
||__ Media removal (software controlled) : Allowed
If data compression is not enabled then it is likely that it has been turned off by the backup application. Check the options in your application to ensure that software compression (done by the server) is turned off and hardware compression (done by the drive) is turned on.
Data compression can be turned on in the drive by

  • The application ( the application will usually override the drive configuration so configuring the application correctly is of prime importance)
  • Resetting the drive
  • Power cycling the drive
  • Using the L&TT Set Drive Configuration utility (use the options to enable compression -see the L&TT user guide below)
NetBackup usersCaution NetBackup will turn off hardware compression in the drive at the end of each backup, so when you look at it with Library and Tape Tools it will be off. This is actually normal for NetBackup, so please check the configuration of NetBackup to make sure that compression is configured correctly. In this case see 'Measure Compression Ratio' (go back one level) as that will show whether compression has been in operation in the drive.
Click here to download the free L&TT utility (www.hp.com/support/tapetools) - this will also access the L&TT user guide
Use the L&TT FAQ to find out how to pull a ticket.
Click here for the L&TT FAQ. (www.hp.com/support/lttfaq) Look for How do I generate a support ticket? in the contents.

My Backup HP Tape Drive 232 flusing led "Cean" and "Tape"

This can often be resolved by loading a Cleaning tape. Cleaning tapes are specific for the LTO1 and can be used only a set number of times. This can be caused by a particular tape which is imparting contaminates into the drive. LTO drives should be cleaned when the light flashes only and not after a fixed number of hours.See the HP LTO1 user guide for details.

Because the DAT72 can copy 72GB with 2:1 compressed, and it's native capability is 36GB in the most. So you can try to copy less than 30GB data to it or try to enable the drive's compress mode.

Symantec Backup Exec 11d compression

Unfortunately, the data types you described are already compressed.
Your hardware and software cannot compress it any further. In fact, compressing compressed files actually increases the file sizes. Don't worry, Backup Exec knows better than to compress compressed files so you can leave your settings in place.

The compressed capacity of a tape drive is a marketing ploy by the tape backup industry to make them more appealing. Yes, if your backup consisted entirely of uncompressed files you might get close to 75GB but never 80GB. You can only count on getting the uncompressed capacity of a tape.

Three options:
Obviously, a higher capacity tape drive will resolve this problem.
You could also swtich to using two tapes but you would have to load the second tape when you arrive for work in the morning and your backup would have to finish during the business day.
Finally, if you have some data that does not change frequently you could seperate it from your active data. Backup the active data on your regular backup. Now you can backup the "archived" data manually with a separate backup job. Once backed up you only have to back it up again when new data is added to the archive.

I hope this helps.

DDS-5 not compatible with windows 2008

I am pretty sure that the driver should be compatible with win08.

If you are using backup exec then try switching to use symantec drivers for your tape drive (setting withing BUEX)

If it is just the tape that cant be read or identified and was backed up using windows backup then try restoring the backup on a 2003 server and then copying the data across the network.

I have to admit this is a tough one. You seem to have tried most things i would try 1st.

I would suggest trying to download an eval coy of another backup program such as backup exec 12.5 from the symantec website and trying that.

This enables you to eliminate the backup software from your enquiries and if you also enable BUEX to use its own drivers (rather than the standard windows drivers) then that is another thing eliminated.

http://www.trilan-it.com/ are pretty good near the Berkshire area if you need a field call to help sort the issue but i would try BUEX 1st as that will help diagnose the problem even if you dont wish to continue with their software

Hi,

You will have to load a driver for the Travan drive, if windows server 2000 sees the tap drive you could use NTbackup.exe to configure a back-up here is a link to read more about it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/237310/

Good Luck

Backup Problem

80GB is the non compressed and 160GB is fully compressed. Based on my experience youll never get a compression rate of more than 1.5 to 1, so you should expect to get more than 120GB on the tape.

The issue that you are having is that you are using the drivers that either are built into windows or came with the tape drive and not the driver from symantec.

Go into Tools->Wizards->Device Configuration Wizard and follow the step to "Install tape device drivers". This should take care of the compression issue.

How can I turn on/off hardware compression in Windowns 2003 Server

Hardware compression is more efficient and faster than software compression and under normal constancies you won't want to do that. Having said that if your drive allows it you would need to download and install a software utility made by your tape manufacturer. That what you will use to turn off that functionality; not a setting on the PC or the backup software. Bottom line is you will need to talk to IBM support. Probably not the answer you wanted to hear but I just went through this with HP a few months ago. They have a general purpose utility that turns off the hardware compression, does a drive analysis, a cheapo write current alignment, firmware update and a few other neat tricks.
