How do i boot my mac book air in fw mode?

FireWire booting, as the name implies, is the ability to start up a computer from an internal or external FireWire drive.
FireWire booting is possible on all Macintosh models that have built-in FireWire ports with the exception of the Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White) and the Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics) models. You may need to upgrade the computer's firmware before FireWire booting will work. You can download the latest firmware for your computer from the Apple Software Updates Web site at http://www.apple.com/swupdates.
Note: Do not confuse FireWire booting with FireWire target disk mode as described in this article: "FireWire Target Disk Mode".
If you are unsure if your computer has a FireWire port, look for ports that look like those in Figure 1, or look for the FireWire symbol shown in Figure 2.

Follow these steps to start up your computer from an external FireWire drive:

    1. Ensure the proper drivers for the FireWire drive are installed in your computer.2. Connect the FireWire drive to your computer and ensure the icon for the disk appears on the Finder desktop.
    3. Install the appropriate system software onto the disk.
    4. Open the Startup Disk control panel and select the FireWire disk.
    5. Restart the computer. The computer should now start up from the FireWire drive. If it does not, make sure you are using third-party drivers that support FireWire booting. Also ensure that the FireWire disk mounts to the Finder desktop and that the system software was properly installed. If it still does not mount, contact the vendor of the device to ensure it can be used as a startup disk.

Hdd i/o firewire port won't work when connected with my hp probook laptop. do i have to install some drivers or firmware. when i use just hdd, things are just fine, evrything works fine. i need...

You cannot use the drive without external power, specially with the 4-pin firewire: there are some USB models that allow it (usually 2,5" drives), but you need 2 USB outlet oth the PC (one for the data and power, the second for power supply). About the compatibility you shouldn't have problems.

Have mini dv recorder, need dv to usb cord to load videos on pc

There is no such cord. You will need to have a DV port on your computer and use a DV cable to transfer the data. If you don't already have a DV port, then you can get add-in PCI or PCcard firewire cards that will give you a DV/firewire/IEEE1394/i.Link/s400 port (all those are the different names that manufacturers call the port).

My pc does not have a firewire port. How can I get the movies from the cam via USB? Thanks

You really need a firewire port for video work because it is a lot faster than USB. See if have a spare PCi slot in your computer then you could install a firewire card into it.

EMac stuck on loading screen

Well i don't know of a fix for the issue u have, but i do have a tip and you might be able to fix the issue you have this way as well. But if you plan on transfering files from one mac to another esp. if one is either an older mac or a portable. you would always want to make one or the other a target disk instead of two stand alone mac's.
Why, because your eMac's older and the data transfer might be failing or can't process the data fast enough to get broken down to bits to be put back on the other end thru the cat5 line. But to transfer files of over 1 GB i would recommend you start the iBook in target disk mode. But since your eMac is the one with some issues put the eMac as the target.
To connect two mac using TDM (Target Disk Mode) you will need to get either a 6-pin IEEE to 6-pin IEEE firewire 800 cable, a 6-pin IEEE to 9-pin IEEE firewire 800 cable, or a 9-pin IEEE to 9-pin IEEE (if your eMac has a 9-pin port) firewire 800 cable.
Then you connect the cable to one of the eMac's 6 or 9 pin ports and the other end to one of the iBooks firewire 800 ports. (the iBook has both the 6 pin a48d559.gif and the 9 pin. 24a3000.gif800 ports) To start up as the target disk you press and hold T immediately after pressing the power on button. once you see the firewire symbol bounce around the screen you can let go. Now its like connecting to a external hard drive.

DO I REALLY NEED A FIREWIRE CARD?

If your camera is Firewire, iLink,or IEEE 1394, then you need Firewire support or a Firewire card.

If your camera has a USB symbol, or says USB anywhere in the manual, you can use USB for the functions it allows.

There is no USB to Firewire or Firewire to USB without the use of an advanced device.

Cant find port on my Dell Computer for firewire data transfer

Hello margaret
I hate to be the one to tell you this but most Dell's do not have a firewire port unless you requested it to have one when you purchased it.

Below is a picture of what the opening of a firewire port looks like:
If you cannot find one of these, I'm sorry to say you don't have the necessary port.

You can buy a daughter board to put in your Dell that will give you firewire ports

Here is a link from eBay with some:
http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=firewire+PCI+cards&_sacat=See-All-Categories

And one from best buy:

If you do decide to buy one of these, please comment on this post or re-post as "Help with installing a firewire PCI card in my Dell" and I, or someone else capable, will gladly help you.

Hope this helps

Location firewire input port

There isn't one on the back panel. You must connect the USB/1394 bracket that's included with the board to an empty slot on the rear of the computer and hook up its connectors INSIDE the computer to the appropriate headers on the motherboard: the purple firewire connector would connect to the purple header (DUH!) on the RIGHT in the pic below, it's a DOUBLE firewire header and it's the only place this bracket will fit. The yellow USB connector would go to any open USB header on the board (guess what color...) Very simple, really.

1f72ff6.jpg ed2998b.jpg

Optionally if your computer case has a built-in firewire port on the FRONT panel, as most do nowadays, you can connect that to the appropriate header on the board using the already-installed cable that's connected to that front firewire port (connect this one to the purple header on the LEFT, it's just a SINGLE firewire port.)
However, this header's pins will NOT match up properly with almost all case's front-panel firewire connectors. You would most likely have to switch around 2 or 3 of the little wires that go into the connector so that it matches the motherboard's pin-out.

It's clearly labled in the manual for the board, and isn't really all that difficult to switch the wires around, but I would recommend just going with the first option and connect the included bracket to the back since it was designed to go with this board and requires no modification.

Sony DSR-45 Lost Firewire Signal

Port's fried for sure -- that's a classic Firewire Port Burnout problem. Could be a cheap repair if you can take it to someone who's not afraid to get their hands dirty (soldering, perhaps). I don't know how integrated the port is to the unit (like on a laptop) so good luck!
