NOT SHOWING UP IN MY COMPUTER

I have 1.5TB Prestige USB 2.0 Desktop Hard Drive. When I connect this hard drive to PC. It does get connect but its not showing as a drive in My Computer. I am telling you it is getting connect because when I right click on My Computer and go to Device Manager, It shows iomega hard drive. What should I do????. I did contact support in IOMEGA they first thought
its happening because of getting less POWER to it so they changed adapter but its the same...When I right click on My Computer and go to MANAGE and DISK MANAGEMENT, It shows me Unknown, Not INitialized and Unallocated space 3.86 GB.What should I do????.

Sorry to tell you but this appears as the hard disk inside your Iomega case has died . Last effort: take it out and plug it in directly in a desktop. In there open it in a testing program like
http://www.hdtune.com/    - the free version.
If you get some errors you will know for sure that the disk is good for the skip. If the disk is good then it was completely corrupted and must be formatted. To do this use
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
After that put it back in the case and it should work normally.

Remove and reinstall all USB controllers To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps: Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK. Click the Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager button. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved. Also it often pays to reinstall in another USB port.

IF your drive doesn't show up after doing all this, then if you can take it to another machine, now try to use it on this new machine, if it works and all is good, then you have some sort of problem on your PC, it may pay to reinstall everything again, However if it Still indicates that it isn't initialized, then it may indeed be faulty. You may have no alternative but to try and format again..
Now another way to see if all is OK or not, is to open up the case remove the HDD and get a USB to HDD "Dongle" then using this see if you can make your drive work, it may simply be the USB interface on the HDD unit itself. If so, then you can still use it via the Dongle, or back it up via the dongle. Then you could get a new case and USB interface, hopefully it will not come to that.

The above link goes to troubleshooting the drive when it seems to not get assigned a drive letter.

Also, it covers formatting the drive to work with windows.

I wish you luck on this.

I think that if all attempts in the link above are exhausted then I think you should recontact Iomega tech support to try to rectify the problem.

Do you have a spare computer that you can try to hook the drive up to in order to save the 150 gb of data on it?

If so, I would experiment with that possibility.

If there are bad sectors on it, then something could be wrong with the drive for it to do this so early in its life cycle.

Does the NTFS program offer any help on trying to recover your data, even though there are lost sectors on the drive?

Have you considered using Norton's Utilities to recover bad sectors or to get data off of a defective drive?

  • keyurshah170 Aug 03, 2010

No NTFS Software is detcting bad sectors but I dont think this process will even finish because i started 2 hours back and still it shows 0% completed. Let me try the Norton way u said...

I hope you can recover the data with Norton's Utilities.

  • keyurshah170 Aug 03, 2010

I am downloading trial version of Norton Utilities from Norton website. Will that be fine?

  • Duane Wong
    Duane Wong Aug 03, 2010

Sure, that's a starting point. It may not have full functionality, though unless you register it.

  • keyurshah170 Aug 03, 2010

Its asking me to register it and purchase it. Do you have yahoo or gtalk id where I can chat with you directly if possible...that will be great help from you...Can i use trial version to finish my task????

  • keyurshah170 Aug 03, 2010

  • Duane Wong
    Duane Wong Aug 03, 2010

I don't think that a trial version can help you complete the recovery of 150 gb of important data. They probably want you to register it to proceed with the recovery. If it is possible, then Norton's has a good reputation for recovering data on non bootable discs or partially damaged hard disks.

Did you get the latest version 14.0?

There should be a recovery console in it, I read.

Symantec has released a version of Norton Utilities which is called Norton Utilities Premier Edition. It also Includes the features of the Norton Utilities plus the Norton Online Backup. It is also compatible with Windows 7. It was released on October 14,09

    Norton Utilities (14.0)
The revival of Norton Utilities as standalone software was announced on 2009-02-03.[25]

The program supports Windows XP , Vista (32/64-bit).

It includes Registry Defragmenter, Registry Cleaners, Disk Cleaner, Disk Defragmenter, Startup Manager, Service Manager, Restore Center, System Optimizer, Process Viewer, and Performance Test.

The product licence was changed to allow it to be used on up to 3 household PCs

I don't use the Yahoo! or Gmail services.

However, I've been reading up on the Norton's Utilities and it's becoming apparent to me that you might have had to have the program installed for backup before restoring files from the Internet.

I would normally try the 'restore' option, but it may not let you if you haven't arranged to have files backed up before hand.

I would hold off of keeping the Norton's Utilities program if it can't recover or restore your data that previously was not 'protected' by the program.

Don't worry, I believe you can get tech support through Symantec and if they agree, you can get a full refund back.

I'm sorry that it didn't work for you.

I would try to contact the iomega group for further instructions on recovering that data, though.

I would use the above link to get a refund on this product if you don't think it will work for your situation where the files were not backed up online before hand.

    http://www.recovermyfiles.com/

The above link goes to a $69.95 program that you can download a trial version for free that will display any recoverable files on your drive. If this doesn't work, as far as showing the files on your hard disk drive, I don't know what will.

The trial version is free and if you don't see any files or it locks up, I'm afraid that those 150 gb of files may not be retrievable.

  • Duane Wong
    Duane Wong Aug 03, 2010

If the trial version of the program shows the files that are recoverable off the 1.5 TB drive from Iomega, then I think I would purchase it. But, if it comes up blank, then I think the files are not retrievable.

That is, first try the trial free version, and go from there. Use your best judgment, I guess.

I can't say that I have experience with this particular program, but they seem legitimate.

I have tried connecting my Iomega 250 gb USB 2 Hard Drive to my computer and it is telling me that the unit has malfunctioned. Is there any way of getting the data off it?

First try connecting this USB drive to a different computer.
If this did not work then the USB adapter case is faulty, then remove the hard drive from the case and attach the hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter then plug it into a working computer's US port. If the hard drive is OK then the computer will see this as an external storage device and you can open the folders and files to backup the data off this hard drive.
If this does not work then there are companies that can recovery data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Does the Iomega show up under 'my computer'?
It should be another drive (D, E, F whatever) and as such you put stuff on to it the same way you would put stuff on to your C drive.

PC not recognising Iomega Prestige 320gb usb portable hard drive. I've connected it all up, disconnected, reconnected, rebooted the computer, but the drive is just not recognised and does not show up in...

Does the drive show in Device Manager? Right click on 'My Computer' and select properties, the open device manager.. Navigate down to Disk Drives or Hard Drives, click on the plus sign and see if your drive is listed. If it is, then right click on the drive name and open properties for the drive. Click on the 'Volumes' tab and hit the 'Populate Button'. It may be the disk just needs initialising, then reformatting before you can use it. If it does need initializing, a wizard should appear to guide you through the process!
If this doesn't solve your problem, try using a different USB cable and/or USB ports on your computer, and ensure to unplug all other USB devices other than keyboard & mouse.

You may need to format the hard drive before you use it.
If your using a PC....go to Control Panel>Admin tools>Computer managemant.Disk Management....Create a new partition and format the drive (NTFS).

Using a Mac go to spotlight and type Disk utillities, partition the drive...
