Find the program in the program list or on your desktop after you've installed and right click it.
Then choose properties. Then click the compatibility tab. Then under settings select "Run in 256 colors" and "Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution"

It won't look as crisp but it will run. I've used it no problems in Windows 7 after doing this.

If you still have issues Windows does offer you the option of trying to tell it to select settings for an earlier version of Windows but I didn't have to do that so I can't speak to what that does.

After installing it, right click the icon in your start menu or on your desktop and select Properties. Then select Compatibility. Check "run in 256 colors" and check "run in 640 x 480 screen resolution." It won't be as crisp a picture but the program will work. I've been using it without issue in Windows 7 since making those changes.

And it did give me an error when I first installed it and I just kept clicking OK and then Finish and it worked.

My monitor gives 16-bit color at 640x480, but will only offer 256 colors at 1024x768 -- and only displays 16 colors when I select that... In order to access resolution options, I have to go into Advanced...

The monitor has no influence here - something is wrong with your video card: either its driver is missing (or corrupted) or the video chip has failed.
Uninstall all the drivers for the video(except the generic VGA one), from Programs and Device Manager
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/f/open-device-manager-windows-7.htm
and reboot several times then go to Dell
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
select your pc and get the correct driver.
If that doesn't fixes it then the video chip has failed, you will need to buy a new video card.

Does it work with Windows XP ? ( Passport to 31 Languages )

  • 486/66 MHz or faster processor
  • Microsoft Windows 95 or 98
  • 16 MB RAM
  • 15 MB hard disk space
  • 2x or faster CD-ROM drive
  • SVGA video (640 x 480 with 256 colors)
  • Windows compatible sound device
according to the manufacturer no, however windows xp has a compatibility wizard that you could try. Might have to install in compatibility mode and run the program in compatibility mode as well. I had to do this with C&C red alert back in the day...

What driver do i need to get 256 color on my computer?

256 colors is a quite old settings for a computer. All modern monitors/laptops come with 16 and 32bit colors, which is FAR more advanced than the old school 256 colors.

There's no driver required to support that setting as it's relatively useless and antiquated, unless you're in a situation where you need to run a program/game in 256 color mode, which you can alter by right clicking the icon, selecting properties, then the compatibility tab and checking the "Run in 256 colors " box.

Hope I was of assistance :)

Changing my colour on desktop

You'll have to run the game in compatibility mode, with the color depth set to 256 colors.

You do this by right clicking on the executable of your game. click on Properties. Compatibility tab. Click the check to run compatibilty w/ Window 98, and set the color depth to 256 Color. That should work! Happy gaming.

Unable to change color depth...

Ok I think i found your problem. You don't need to install any drivers.

Switch your display to 256 colors To switch your display to 256 colors
Some games and other software programs require that your monitor be set to 256 colors, or they run better in 256 colors. Many of those programs will switch your monitor to 256 colors automatically when you start the program. For those that don't, follow the steps below if you want to switch the display temporarily while the game or program is running.
  1. On your desktop or on the Start menu, right-click the game or other program that you want to run in 256 colors, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Compatibility tab.
  3. Select the Run in 256 colors check box.
  • The screen will revert to your default color quality when you close the program.
  • Try switching to 256 colors if your software program shows the wrong color or the graphics redraw slowly.
  • If your software program appears in a small window in the center of your screen, you can increase its size by changing your screen resolution temporarily. Follow the procedure above, but in step 3 select the Run in 640x480 screen resolution check box. Your screen resolution will revert to its previous resolution when you close the program.
  • The Compatibility tab is available only for programs or games located on your computer's hard disk. It is not available if the program is stored on a floppy disk, compact disk, or a network.
Please rate this if it fix your issue
